How to delete the old BT telephone number?

Since VM installed fibre cable to the house, we no longer use the landline telephone because of the high number of scam calls each day.

Old friends are still calling the landline number which gives them the ringing tone.  How can we get the BT number, which VM took over cancelled altogether?

Why are we still being charged £19 per month for telephone line rental?

  • Hi rogerlindley

Welcome back to the Community Forums.

Sorry to hear of your concerns with the number of scam calls you're receiving.

If your contract is still within its minimum term and you've a landline as part of your services with us, then removing the landline service would incur early disconnection fees.

Alternatively, you can request another landline number altogether, though I must advise, that the 'new' number may have been used previously in the past and therefore, may not resolve your concerns with the amount of scam calls you get. There is a £25 one-off charge if you wish to request to change your landline number. We do have helpful tips and advice here on how to protect yourself against scam calls should you need.

Landline line rental charges are currently included in our bundles and services that include landline.

Consider fitting a call screening device on your landline. I have used this device in the past, when I had a landline

    https://www.truecall.co.uk/shop/truecall-call-blocker

It screened out 100% of the scam calls while still letting callers logged in the address book of the device to get through without issue.

  • Have you tried registering the number with the TPS, telephone preference service? It wont help with overseas scammers, but it will stop you recieving calls from UK based salespeople.

Technically, there is no reason why a telephone service provider cannot block all incoming calls while keeping the service active, it's very easy to do technically.

The problem here is that 'some' service providers have no procedural mechanism to achieve this.

If you asked for the number to be ported to Virgin, meaning the line is now connected to your hub, you can cancel this at any time by ringing Virgin & they can take it off your bill, but you may lose a lot of discount by doing so.

If you did not ask VM to port your number, then because VM is on a different network infrastructure to BT & they have their own exchanges, your BT line will continue to work until you cancel it with BT. If you are still plugged into the BT socket, you are still with BT & should contact them.
