sky sports app through virgin keeps going blurry on pc

Hi, I some times have to watch football through the web portal on virgin tv go, it loads the sky sports app and works ok for the first 10 mins or so, then when the game starts it keep going pixalated and blurry to the point you cant even make out the players or the ball?

Its not a broadband issue or network issue, I have my own router and switch and thats managed, its showing no issues, errors or dropped packets or lag on the network. I have approx 960Mbps down and 106Mpbs up so its not that.

Netflix, amazon prime and plex all stream at higher quality without even glitching. looks like a Sky Sports issue with their app, but how do i complain about that or get support? Im not a sky customer?!

are there any ports i need to open to help this? or any other advice? Its annoying!

(im watching on windows 10 gaming rig thats an i7 with 32gig of ram and 1060 6gb card with a lan connection to a unifi UDM PRO Router)

thanks in advance for any ideas/help 🙂

  • Hi Meg

"this was for an issue that regarded no access to the Sky Sports app at all."

I don't understand your comment: this thread (from 21/8/23) is ALL about quality problems in accessing Sky Sports via Virgin Media! And it shows NO solution for the several complainants.

I'm afraid my laptop has no Ethernet connection.

  • Absolutely - just Sky Sports exhibits this problem - quite consistently..... just like all the complainants above.

      Sorry to hear this.

How this on the actual TV is it still blurry?

How often is is it blurry is it all the time?

Do you have a screenshot at all of how it looks?

        Matthew

        TV delivery is fine.

As I said, it loses resolution significantly (to much worse than SD - captions unreadable) every 5-10 minutes for 15-30 seconds. This is entirely in line with the earlier complaints in this thread (PLEASE READ IT) - and the screenshot already posted is very typical of my experience.

As I have asked before, how were all the earlier complaints dealt with by Sky?

  • Did anybody ever get anywhere with this?

To reiterate what the problem is:

I pay for Sky Sports package.  When you go to the Sky Sports website on a PC/laptop to watch live streams, it prompts you to download the Sky Desktop Player app.

I've just tried to watch the Liverpool v Chelsea match.. and it was virtunally unwatchable.  Video and audio would freeze and show the 'progress circle' every few seconds. When it played again, the quality would be attrocious (very blurry) for a while.. then it would improve to what you'd expect.. HD quality, before the whole process would start again.

Just to be clear (and hopefully to ward off the questions that keep being asked, despite people already giving the answers), I'm watching on a Windows 11 PC, via the Sky Desktop Player app (which I've tried removing/reinstalling).   The PC has an AMD Ryzen 5 5500 @ 3600 Mhz, 16GB DDR4 RAM and an Nvidia GeForce RTX4060 (8GB DDR6) and is connected via ethernet.  "Sam Knows" shows speeds of 945 Mbps at the device, and every other streaming service works absolutely fine.

It seems obvious that the problem is with the Sky Player app itself or its connection to Sky servers - BUT, it's Virgin we pay for this service... and it is inumbent on Virgin to address this.

It's been reported many, many times and we've gone around in circles more times than I care to mention.

Virgin have all the information they need to address this issue, rather than dancing around it.  It's about time they started looking after their customers - and if that means taking Sky to task, then that's exactly what they should do.

If it helps, I can post a link to a video I have made of the issue, which clearly shows the problem along with system resources at the time, current broadband connection speed and another streaming provision working absolutely fine whilst the Sky Desktop Player flounders.

  • Well said DazzyL

You have reported exactly what I (and many others) have told Virgin over several years now - and all we get is obfuscation. As you say it is quite clearly Sky's problem - and Virgin just will not address it with them. At the very least, they should be doing so in order to negotiate a hefty discount on their terms for inadequate service! I wonder if it is deliberate action/inaction by Sky to try to push subscribers from Virgin to Sky directly (at a higher margin).

Interesting that you mention problems with Football today, as I experienced probably the worst performance ever today - on the Sky F1 channel, right at the (exciting) start of the Austin Grand Prix. Whereas loss of resolution usually lasts for around 15 seconds (bad enough), on this occasion it was in minutes, at least for the first part of the race. It is uncanny how it particularly affects programmes that are inevitably very popular - perhaps there's a connection.....

PLEASE PLEASE Virgin - pick up the ball and run with it to Sky - no more time-wasting and shirking your responsibilities - get on with some ACTION. And report back on the outcome here.

This forum is for the Stream (Flex) device and not for streaming apps.

As such the thread should really be in the TV On The Go  forum because it's relates to streaming apps and not the Stream (Flex) box .

Looking at the TV on the go forum there have been very few recent posts about problems with the Sky Sports desktop player. (The main issue there appears to be people not clicking on the Virgin TV UK icon when signing in, but instead entering their details in the box for direct Sky Sports subscribers).

It may be helpful to the forum staff if members in this thread having problems with screen resolutions, or the app freezing indicated (aside from their device and operating system) which browser they are using, whether they have tried other browsers, and also their rough geographical area, eg Leeds, Manchester, London etc in case that throws up a common denominator.

If you haven't already done so then try a different browser

I suggest checking in their browser settings to see if hardware or graphics acceleration is turned on, and if so turn it off and see if that makes any difference.

For those that have tried uninstalling and re-installing the desktop player on windows devices they should also ensure that they remove the hidden files and folders relating to the desktop player.

      - Uninstall the Sky Sports Player app

      - Type 'run' in the search bar and open the 'Run' app

      - Type in '%AppData%' and click 'OK' and delete the 'Sky Sports' folders

      - Click back on 'AppData' and go into the 'LocalLow' folder

      - Click on the 'Cisco' folder, then the 'VideoGuard' folder

      - Delete the 'SKY_GB-SKY_SKYSPORTS' folder

      - Restart you computer

      - Download the Sky Sports Player app again

This certainly is false information...I've been using this poor sky sports app for over a year now on my brand new laptop...and clicking on watch the sky sports channel through virgin tv in the go which opens up a new tab to the sky sports player..it's just soooo blurry/pixelated every 20-30 secs and lasts for about 30secs to 1min. It's totally unwatchable audio and all is fine just the picture it's totally down to the sky sports player it's awful..virgin should just let us watch it on the tv go players other than re directing us to that shambles.

  • There is no web browser version, only the Windows or macOS player.

      Thanks for the reply.

So are you not able to sign in online on the web browser and watch?

      Kind regards,
      Ilyas.

  • Hello everyone, still having issues with this in November 2024, like previously said by other members I also can watch anything else on virgin tv go without any issues, but sky sports app with sighing in with virgin it makes it blurry and laggy, my Internet download floats between 950mbps and 1100mbps with upload of 100.

This problem does not go away, just because nothing is done!

It is as bad as ever.

I use edge to launch the Sky Player, the graphic acceleration settings were already on.

I have tried toggling on / off but still blurred picture at times

  • I have been using the Sky Sports Streaming App for 3 years and this problem has always been there. Sharp picture, then every two to five minutes the picture will go blurred for 30 seconds or so, then back to sharp and on and on and...

The app is hopeless. Always has been. Looking at the comments from Virgin, they pretend to answer, pretend to be of help, but really they are saying nothing of any help at all. And then they just fob you off. Have you tried this, can you do this, and the merry go round continues.

It's getting to a point where Sky's internet is on par with Virgin, so the benefit of being with Virgin is getting less and less. To the point where when my contract expires, I'm heading over to Sky. I'm doing exactly what Sky want me to do, and the reason they refuse to help any third party customer.

I love my sport and it's essential I have a good picture for the entirety of the event. Virgins workaround is not the answer.

And before anyone says it. I won't let the door hit me on the way out.

Hi BillUp thanks for posting and welcome back to our community.

Sorry to hear you're having a poor experience with the Sky Sports App. And sorry for any inconvenience this may be causing. Can you advise if you're having the same issue when logged in on a browser?

      Regards

      Lee_R

This is still a problem and in fact I would say its getting worse, the blurdness is more frequent.

I can watch the same game on eitehr my phone or tablet and it is perfect, but using the desktop player is now unwatchable.
