Not getting speed I pay

I've been with Virgin Media for about a month now. I've moved into a new build house and this is currently my 2nd virgin media router in that time. I've done the samknows speedtest and the speed to the router is 1.1GB which is what I pay for. However, the speed from the router to the devices fluctuates massively and hasn't been any higher that 300mbps despite paying for 1.1GB. I understand that I will never truely get 1.1GB and would expect anything 800mbps> but I am getting no where near this speed. I've called Virgin Media 3 times regarding this, we have performed switching off/on, reset etc. An engineer has came out to change the router. At the time the engineer tested the speed which was 600mbps> and told me this should increase over time but it has not. I am out of ideas, can anyone recommend anything?

How are you testing?  What device are you using?  Wired or Wifi?  If using Windows, retest Samknows using "Safe Mode with Networking Support".  Use a known good Cat 6 cable wired directly to the Hub.

Note VM only guarantee 30 Mb over Wifi.

I've tested the speed on Ookla, google and Samknows. All similar results. At the time of my initial post, I was testing through WIFI. Someone recommended I should order a powerline which I have. I've tested it via wired connection and as we speak my download speed is 115mbps and upload of 8mbps. This test was under the conditions you recommended above.

How would I know if I have a cat 6 or a cat 5 cable connected to my hub and surely that would be VM responsibility to provide the correct equipment? So am I right in saying when it specifies in the contract of 545mbps as the guaranteed minimum speed, is this direct to the hub or from the hub to devices?

  • The engineer "told me this should increase over time". I often say the same when I pay 60% of the price of goods in shops before hurrying out.

In all seriousness did the VM engineer really do a proper wired speed test and then tell you that by some temporal magic your newly installed and instantly failing hub connection would fix itself the second the engineer has had chance to screech off down the drive in their VM Ford Transit?

The first engineer who initially installed the hub told my partner it was up and running and the speed would increase over time. I came home from work and was suspicious of this after I done a speed test on my phone. I phoned VM the next day and they done the usual over the phone tests before sending out another engineer. I mentioned the whole 'it takes time to get up to speed' comment from the previous engineer and the 2nd engineer doubled down on this. I stood with him as he measured the speed on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz on his device and I tested at the same time, and the speeds were 600mbps> which I was content with at the time. But since then I've not seen those speeds again

On the 2.4GHz band seeing 600Mbps, is not possible.

Share screen shots of the FULL Samknows Realspeed tests so we can see some facts.

Well saying "samknows speedtest and the speed to the router is 1.1GB which is what I pay for" is like job done its meaning less you want speed to your device.

Don't use powerline they will kill your speed get a new cable

    Digitus LAN Cable Cat 6-3m - RJ45 Network Cable - S/FTP Shielded - Compatible with Cat6A & Cat7 - Grey : Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

You may need to reinstall your PC leave off the AV to be sure its fine for testing or boot up Home - Linux Mint

other then that its possible the hub past the cable to hub then to your device connection is faulty.
