New customer slow speed help?

Hi there, VM just went live in my small town in scotland. I had 1Gbs installed 3 days ago and the download speeds have never hit 500 yet, any advice? I've tried wireless and every wired port. multiple different devices wired. Ive contacted VM chat, the status page varies from "unable to connect to equipment" or "intermittant signal in your area" to "bad request" error page. Upload speed are constantly over 100 when doing tests. any help appreciated.

  • I had similar problems, discovered the onboard 1gbps network card was the cause of the problems and replaced with a new PCIE Network Card and speeds returned to normal.

The service to the VM Hub is correct speeds are : 1137 / 109.

The figures suggest your desktop computer is only drawing data at 384 Mb/s

    The reasons can be :
    1)  PC Network Adaptor Driver that needs to be updated.
    2) A bloated PC security package that is killing the speed
    3) Mis-reporting of the computers speed due to browser issues.
    4) A computer that is old or maxed on some unexpected task.

    To rule out 3) try : https://interprefy.speedtestcustom.com/
does the PC do any better ?

Thanks for the reply. Speed test wasnt any better. Driver was up to date, tried 3 different browsers. Pretty sure its a 1gbs card in the pc. The wifi speeds on multiple phones have also never broken 500 barrier :( . Suppose its a good thing the incoming speeds are correct.

Yes it is a 1Gbps card in the PC we can be quite sure of this.  With a 100Mbps card or 100Mbps connection rate the highest speeds seen are around 94 Mbps.

To discover if the PC's software complement are part of the problem, boot the PC into Safe Mode + Networking  and re-run the speed tests over a cable connection.

If there is a marked improvement in download speed, it is a clue the software on the PC degrading performance.  Software like Norton AntiVirus and similar content filters can sap network speed.

No change there. ive tried a laptop also and speeds are similar. wifi the same also so surely not every device being the problem? Looked at the router log and "erouter0 ipv6 address is empty" every 15 mins like clockwork, not sure if thats relevant or not. Online chat said last night "sent new signals to router" had to reboot and montior for 24hrs but nothing changed.

Is PC directly connected to hub?

        run cmd

        ping -t 194.168.4.100

as you run a speed test see if you get many drops or high ping on download test

Speed to the Router seems okay on the Sam Knows test.  VM don't use IPv6 so yes, any entries would be empty.  What router are you using that reports the missing IPv6 entries?

Its the one that came with it, Hub 5x i believe.

Ahh, okay, the new NexFibre/VM XGS-PON connection one.  Thanks for the info.  Still not helping your download problems with your devices though.  As for CS "sending a signal" ...

Unless the Hub is faulty, I can't think of a reason why all your devices are not getting a decent wired speed?  I can sort of understand a Wifi slowness, but wired should be around 940 Mb.  Have you tried different ethernet cables, Cat 5e or Cat 6?

  • Did a couple more speed tests faster one is on edge and other is on firefox. done moments apart. cisco speed test on both browsers showing roughly 400 each.

Better using that one. Fair range is there not or is that normal?

Yeah think im gonna do the same. I should be grateful the incoming speeds are correct going by other peoples issues. Thanks to everyone for the advice. Nice helpful community on here :)

  • The second of these is the signal I get in the living room 4ft from the router. The first of these is what I get in the kitchen with one of your “booster” things. Clearly it is not anything whatsoever to do with my equipment bc both were taken on my iPad Pro. The only difference is I was in the same room as the router. What about all these promises of fast WiFi all around the house?

The VM Wifi guarantee is only 30Mb.

However, if the Pod is white, I believe these are only Wifi ac protocol and the Hub 5 is Wifi ax protocol.  This would go someway to explaining the Wifi issues.  If you want better, invest in some decent Wifi 6 access points, preferably with a cabled backhaul.

WiFi has nothing to do with the OP post as there wired is slow.
