What Hub Will I Get?

I'm due to join VM on 28 January 2025 as that's the date the equipment is scheduled be delivered to me. The pre contract details state I am having M500 Broadband but doesn't specify which hub I will be given. I understand there are 3 options: Hub3, Hub4 and Hub5. As a new customer I was wondering which one I'll be getting and assumed it will be Hub3. Is that likely to be the case? I'm also getting the V360 tv box.

  • Just let it pan out.

Less than nine times out of ten it all goes fine, it's the 1-10% that dont, that end up on this forum!

Extending the old contract for another month is a good "insurance policy" for being one of the 10%.  Also, your VM contract wont start until installation is complete and you are successfully connected.  After that you can compare the two providers head to head in your property for up to 14 days - if the VM connection is not to your satisfaction - you can cancel the whole contract in the 14-day period and incur no charges whatsoever from VM and retain your old provider.

There are lots of ways you can improve the wifi signal between rooms if that is a problem.  If it turns out to be so, just post on the "Networking and Wifi"  forum for help.

So you cant lose really, fret not 😎

If you’re lucky it will be a Hub5, it is rumoured that new customers are now getting them. The vm staff on the board will not be able to advise as they have no access to this type of information.

Do not cancel your existing broadband account until VM is installed and working, or like others reporting on here you could be left without Internet. VM connections are often delayed.

Thanks jpeg. The date for joining was suggested and agreed by VM. My existing broadband finishes on 31 January 2025. If I extend it then that will cost me another month's broadband charge. I'm beginning to think I might have made a mistake in joining VM?

You might be safer using the Ofcom OTS scheme, but that is very new and there's little experience as yet as to how well it works with VM.

Does your house have an existing VM cable from the street? It's the installation of that which causes the most problems.

Yes there is the brown box on my external wall and two cables from it. One goes into the room where there is a VM junction type box (assume this is where I'll connect the Hub) and the other cable runs to the living room which is probably some 50/60 feet away and where the V360 box will be located. I'm hoping the wifi signal between the two boxes will be satisfactory as I don't want to have the inconvenience of running ethernet cables through 2 rooms and a hall.

Stock permitting, it should be a Hub5 - It may be previously used by a customer or new.
