Poor installation

Had VM installed today, once the engineer had finished internally, he said he just needed to "tidy up" outside before he would be on his way. We have a VM box on the outside of the wall that was put in by the housebuilders (there is also a coax cable running from her into the property though the installer said he could not use this which I understand). We have been left with the fibre cable exiting the box and a hole drilled at the side which has been covered with white silicone which looks terrible, why could this not go through the box to keep things tidy. I stressed when booking with the salesman I wanted a clean install and was coming back to VM in a new build property as the the stream boxes would give us this inside. I assumed the cable would enter the house through the brown box already in place leaving outside clean and tidy also.

VM installers do like their silicone sealant!

Do you know what is inside the brown box? Is it an arrangement like this?

What is on the opposite side of the wall? Has the installer set up the hub on the opposite side of the wall?

The installer may well have chosen to drill adjacent to the box to reduce the likelihood of damaging the fibre cable in the box and/or contaminating the inside of the box with brick dust.

VM can use a 'brick buster' plate to cover cable entry points (which makes the installation look fractionally better)

    or a cable entry cover

      Hi Nicka1979

      Welcome to the Community Forums.
Sorry to hear of your concerns with the cabling being placed outside the box and its entry point.
It's not uncommon for the cabling to come out of the omni-box and through another part of the wall, depending on where the entry point is needed for the equipment location inside. It could also be that the cable entry point could not be inside, depending on how the box is designed. Our apologies if this was not advised to you.
Please let us know if you are having any further issues or have any questions at all. We'll be here to help on the Community Forums if needed.

Thank you for the reply, while I can understand there may be a need to take the cable outside of the box (though there were no restrictions inside to cause this, and many other houses on the estate have not needed this) is it normal practice for any holes to be filled with bright white sealant without any attempt to make the installation tidy?

  • VM do not have any quality control processes, is very poorly managed, and frequently employ itinerant sub contractors who are poorly supervised and quite frankly have not got a clue, which is why we see this sort of thing all the time.
