new router installation

Hello

i got my new router from virgin last week

actually its at my elderly mums house , she previously had virgin media broadband,

She currently has internet through now tv.

question , the wall socket that the now tv router is plugged into can i attach the new virgin router to this?.

The wall socket looks the same as the virgin one but it has no markings on??

if this isnt the correct wall socket how do i find the correct wall socket?.

ive tried to order a engineer to come out but im just going round and round in bleddy circles with this...

any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

You could post up some pic's of what connections you do have. Contributors on here may be able to advise on those.

Standard cut/paste reply to a 'missing socket' topic on here is ...

Have you checked to make sure there is no other kind of connection? Sometimes there is no wall box, just a trailing cable. The cable could be hidden within, or behind, furniture. Occasionally only a very short stub of wire is left behind often hidden within a blanked-off fitting. A few examples of the kind of things to look for are in the images below from past topics.

A wall box may be branded with the logos of an old cable TV company (not VM). Past occupiers of your property may have removed the cable and sometimes they are removed by other installers, such as satellite TV techs.

If you have a cable/plug trailing from the wall, you may need a coupler adapter to join two plugs together

Also available from the likes of Screwfix, Toolstation etc.

If you have a plastic omnibox outside on the wall (where the VM cable comes in from the street) see if you can trace any wires from that into your home. The wall box will look something like these

(styles and colours may vary and branding may be non-VM (such as former cable TV companies).

If no luck, call the pre-installation and delivery team on 0800 052 1734 explain the problem and request a tech visit to install a socket.

  • This is the connection box , i think its in use for the current router from now tv,

If it is in use for now tv will i be able to plug the new virgin media router into this or will it be a completely different box/connection?.

    Thanks for the replies.

That is a bespoke coax network connection to VM, so won't be in use by another ISP.

That is your VM wall box. Only VM will use that for services. Example in pic no. 2 below shows what is likely to be inside

      https://uktechhub.com/forums/topic/virgin-media-hub-3-m100-fibre-broadband-install/

In pic. no. 2 above, the black cable is the incoming supply cable and the cable with the red markings coming out of the bottom of the metal isolator box is the Quick Start cable which connects to the VM hub.

In your own photo, it looks like an extension cable might already be connected to the bottom of your box but can't see the details of that from your pic.
