Is there a backup connection option?

Hi

I recently had a burglary at my home and have since upgraded security with new door locks and I have added additional Ring cameras.

One thing that seems to be an obvious weakness of the Ring camera system is that it totally relies on a stable internet connection to function.

So if a smart burglar comes along who realises that I am on Virgin broadband, they could simply cut the cable at the front of my house and then my Ring cameras would be out of action.

I plan to move the external cable/connection so that it enters my house below ground level and runs under my floor to the router. This means that the cable on my property will no longer be visible from the road/outside and can't be cut off easily.

The only problem then is a really smart burglar could break into the Virgin cabinet and cut my/everyones connection off there if they really wanted to break into my house again and not be seen on camera.

So my question is, with the standard Virgin Hub/equipment, is it possible to have a backup connection via 4/5G or something similar which will automatically connect if my main cable connection drops out or is tampered with?

Thanks

If you use modem mode you can buy a dual wan router that will use two connections for redundancy.  Some models can even use three or four connections.

I use the Virgin Hub in modem mode connected to an Asus RT-AX86U Router. So what you are saying is that I could connect a 4G router to the 2.5G connection on the AX86U and run it as a WAN connection?

Would the switch from the virgin HUB to the 2nd WAN connection be automated and instant with the Asus Router? if the Virgn connection dropped?

I have the same router and yes, it has a dual WAN mode.

You can use any of the ethernet ports as a second WAN.

Here is my setup (Second connection is a 4G router):

You can set the detection of an outage and configure to switch over within 5 - 10 seconds.

Dual WAN presentation may well be fine if your internet connections fails for any means, but there are other factors. 1) you are relying on a third party to keep you video secure 2) you are using WiFi cameras which are exceeding easy to jam. If you are serious about security you need to use Ethernet wired cameras and every camera should have sight of another camera. You need to have the video stored security on your premises and also transferred to the cloud. I use Uniquiti Protect with PoE cameras.
