How do you move from Virgin Media to another provider?

Hi all, 

I have been with VM since the 90's when they took over NTL world.

Over the years my bill for VM has gone up and up and up, I contacted them and have their basic package, but even that's too much now.

So I decided it would be cheaper to buy a new TV, then go with another provider for the Broadband and phone. The new TV has all the latest apps and for the last month I have not really used my TIVO box to watch TV.  

What I need to know is how to leave VM?                                                                                                                      Do I tell them first or do I speak to the new provider first?

    Call them. Ask for the end date of your contract. If it has expired already you just need to give VM 30 days notice to cancel the service.

     

    DO NOT leave this task in the hands of an agent provider.

    They will tell you they will handle things with VM just so they can close the sale and then you will be left with two services and two bills.

    Do you know the provider you want to move to?

    Do you need to port your existing landline phone number over to the new provider?

      Hi goslow,

      The provider I want to go to is Vodaphone.                                                                                                                   I have a mobile with them and have used them for years.                                                                                           Not sure if I can keep my landline phone number, I will need to look into it.

        Whether or not you want to port your landline number to Vodafone is a key decision which will influence how to proceed.

        The usual advice on here is to try to overlap your two services if it is feasible/affordable for you to do that for a short time.

        No provider is immune from potential problems with a new installation. If your Vodafone installation gets delayed for any reason, and your VM installation is pending disconnection, you can end up in a situation with no services. Overlapping also gives you a chance to check the new Vodafone connection works as advertised and you are happy with the new service during your 14 day cooling off period. If Vodafone does not live up to expectation you can fall back on the VM connection.

    If you're out of contract with VM then 30 days notice are required.  The new provider will make all the arrangements as to porting over your telephone number and starting the new service and stopping the old.

      AIUI, the 30 day notice applies if you are simply cancelling VM but, if you use OTS, package costs after the minimum term are applied pro-rata like a mobile phone switch.

        Can I ask about two options here

        1.Give Virgin Media the 30 days notice .. so e.g...Contract ending 30th November .. so contact by some means on 1st November ..to give 30 days notice to leave ?.....or

        2.Use the OTS service with your new ISP to take care of the switch entirely including services and landline number .. and also when should this be done as at option 1. the 1st November or 30th November ?

        VM has become incredulously expensive for me..at the present the CS agent told me looking at my file ..costs over £600 . Best option to save some cash for me ..
