Crackly phone line

Our phone line started crackling on every single call a few weeks ago. We'd hoped it was a temporary issue but if anything it has got worse. At times it even starts squealing mid-call. There is no indication of a local problem and we've done everything we can at our end in terms of checking connections/unplugging handsets etc so we need some assistance. As mobile reception is hit and miss where we live we have to have a functioning landline. Currently we both have a lot of hospital calls coming through on it and my 77 year old father-in-law also needs to be able to contact us easily as he lives alone and is a two hour drive from us. Please can we organise an engineer visit? I've come here in the first instance rather than ringing the call centre as last time we had a problem with the landline they did something at their end that cut us off completely for days on end, which was a complete disaster. Thanks in advance for your help!
