New fibre phone line switch over

Hi,

I have just received an email to explain the home phone line will be switched over to fibre. My issue is that the Hub is currently upstairs and phone line in the hall so I cannot just use the adaptor as suggested. Please can someone advise? I believe an engineer will be required in this situation. Would I need just a longer cable or a relocation of the Hub?

Kind regards,

  • My folks are in their late 80s, faced with the same issue they bought a cordless phone with multiple handsets. The base unit connects direct to the VM Hub port TEL 1 (or BT Router).  Now REN does not matter and the telephone cables do not need to be reconnected. The old BT style sockets & cables can all be removed during the next re-decoration.

  • Following as I have the same issues. Hub on ground floor, master phone on first floor with extensions connected!

A VM technician can wire in to any existing extension socket & the rest will be live. However you need to bear in mind that your current landline has a maximum REN of 4. The hub line REN is maximum 3. So while you could basically run 4 phones per installation on your existing setup, you can only run 3 via the hub.

  • Hi Zelda12345,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums.

If you phone line is not currently near where your broadband hub is, it's likely that we'll need to move the hub. Let's take a little look at things and we can get an engineer booked to talk through available options for you 🙂

In order to do that I will need to confirm some information with you to pass security so I have sent you a direct message to allow us to do this with you in a private space. If you are using a PC/Laptop then you can just click on the little ✉ at the top right-hand side of the page to access your inbox. If you are on a mobile/tablet device then instead click on the little circle icon in the top right then select 'Messages'. 😊

    Thanks,

In my situcation I can't move the hub its in my home office and connected to a rack. Can the tech wire the current pone master socket back to the hub on a ground floor? To VM charge for anything like this?

It's free but somewhat sad that this option is not automatically offered for those with an entension. After all connecting two phone wires should be a lot easier than moving your hub.

REN is the current drive rating for the A/C ~75V 25Hz ringer signal that is modulated onto
the 48v line voltage (which is used for speech + dialling).

Most electronic phones, specially if mains powered have an REN load of < 1.
