Why multifactor authentication?

So1
On our wavelength

My email account is not a bank account so why do we have to have "multifactor authentication"?  and who requires it?

Having to have a 3rd parting email address as a user name for my virgin media email seems crazy to me.  I regard this other email, which I don't normally check, as less safe than my blueyonder address.  I really don't understand all this.  Do I have to check that email account before I can get into the blueyonder email?

AFAIK you only need to check the third-party email account for a verification code message when making specific changes via My Virgin Media, i.e. when changing your Sign In:

  • Email Address
  • Password
  • Password Recovery Question

or Memorable Word.
