Update re email closures - I have been contacted by the Executive Resolutions Department at VM, attached to Lutz Schuler, the Chief Executive Officer of Virgin Media.
To stop me initiating a complaint to the Communications Ombudsman, they have offered me a cash settlement. I’m reluctant to share the amount as everybody’s threshold is different, but while not being life-changing, it’s definitely not a small amount. Plus, the figure offered was increased during the call. Please also note I currently don’t have any accounts with VM.
It therefore seems they’re concerned about any Ombudsman involvement.
So I suggest anyone who can spare a couple of minutes email the executive team and raise an official complaint outlining their particular situation, suggesting communication Ombudsman involvement. I’m unable to add the executive team’s email as it’ll be automatically removed from this reply before posting, but it’s logical being ‘[REMOVED]’. Hopefully, writing it like this will avoid removal from post.
The amount I’ve been offered, I feel adequately recognises 3 things: the amount of time I’ve had the email, the importance of the service to me, and the very little notice of closure.
Good luck & hope you manage to get a similar resolution, which although not ideal, goes some way towards lessening the blow of losing a service many of us have had for a long, long time.

This article makes interesting reading. I too have had my email address for at least 25 years. Until recently I had a Virgin mobile account. But since Virgin sold out to O2 I no longer subscribe to Virgin media services. This was not by choice. The other services available from Virgin are not available in my area so not able to subscribe to one of their services. I would have been up for paying a small subscription to keep my mail address as it has been a major headache trying to make the changeover to another service.I believe this is a matter that should be taken up by the relevant Ombudsman as were are being dumped thro no fault of our own. Shame on you Virgin media. james [REMOVED]
