Some clarity around Stream lack of recording funtionality please.

Hoping to get some clarity - I currently have a V6 box and a TIVO box and I am considering replacing at least the TIVO with a Stream unit to give me some flexability on where I place the TIVO unit in the house.

My initial thought was to software upgrade my V6 to 360 software and get a Stream unit to replace the TIVO. However I was told tonight that this option is no longer available and I had to replace both units with Stream units.

However I have seen many comments here on the lack of recording ability. When I challenged customer service on this, I was told Stream "provides access to catch-up services and on-demand content for most sports and entertainment events. Some live broadcasts may not be available on catch up, which is why we say "most events".

So in real terms what does this mean? What channels/events do people have trouble accessing in catch up services? The channels/events I am most worried about is Golf & Tennis channels & events. Some real life examples would be really appreciated.

  • I was annoyed when I got my stream box and saw it couldn't record. In practice (I've had it several months now) it's been no issue. Using catch up and setting a watchlist means I get to see everything I used to record on the 360 box. Just one exception. Niche channel Talking Pictures TV doesn't do catch up so that is one channel I have given up. But Channels BBC, Channel 4, ITV, Sky Premiere etc are fine.

There are other ways to watch Talking Pictures on catch up. Alongside your broadband, if you also have an aerial then some freeview TV's have a red button service for Talking Pictures on Channel 82 (the Encore logo underneath the channel dog)

There is also a catch up service  via the Talking Pictures Encore app which is available on ios, android, and firetv devices, alongside a browser version https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/

Don't you have to sit through forced ads on most of those? And only have limited time to watch the programs before they get removed?

On stream boxes you are forced to watch adverts on all channels, unless you pay an extra subscription like ITVx. Some sports can only be watched live.

I suspect the information you've been given is wrong - unless VM has quietly changed its policy - as a V6 can be migrated to a 360 with a Stream for multiroom that can play back the 360 recordings. It's new customers who are told they get only Stream.
