Short notice to terminate email accounts

As with others here, I have received notice that email account that has been used for the last 20 years or so will suddenly be terminated

This is extremely unfortunate and obviously a major frustration for existing customers (and potential customers) of virgin.  It's not clear why they would terminate these rather than increasing the charge for services

Worse, the short notice is hugely impractical to switch all communication, accounts, correspondence, log-in's etc to a new email address... can whoever decides these things at least extend the period to say 6 or 12 months to allow an orderly transition?

Many thanks!

Is this the same mailbox you posted about in 2022 or a different one?

Are you now/currently a VM broadband customer?

For those who are currently a VM customer, the options are explained below from VIP 用心棒

    https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Email/Concerned-Virgin-Net-eMail-Users/m-p/5575739#M279991

although the fine details of what exactly is possible seem to be evolving over time

If you are not currently a VM customer then VM seems intent on finally clearing out these legacy mailboxes with no further extensions or exceptions. New customers do not get any VM email addresses and existing customers cannot create new ones.

If you need to back up the mailbox, this topic may help

  • Hi PhilipB999 thanks for posting and welcome back to our community.

Sorry to hear of any concerns the correspondence regarding the virgin.net mailboxes may have caused you.  As the fantastic goslow has asked, are you an existing broadband customer with ourselves? If so, you have the option to transfer the email address to your existing account.  Regrettably we're unable to offer an extension to the closing of those mailboxes, sorry.  Please get back to us, if you do require us to arrange a transfer of mailbox.

    Regards

    Lee

      Thanks Lee

I was a customer a couple of years ago, in order to keep the mail account active

Although I was then told afterwards it didn't make any difference to the continuation of the email account, and someone set up the email to continue operating

So - like others I assume - I would be very happy to re-activate that account if it keeps the email address live, if someone can tell me how to link that?

Or are you saying the email address would be *transferred* to *another* email address?

(In simple terms: if someone sends an email to the Virgin.net address I've had for the last 20 years, will it get to me somehow or disappear into a black hole never to be seen again?)

      Many thanks again
      Phil

        Hi PhilipB999

You need to have a current and active service with us in order for us to transfer the impacted mailbox across.

When the email account has been completely closed, an incoming email should bounce back to the sender. But with VM there seems to be degrees of closure, at least for some period of time.

It may not be worth signing up for broadband to keep the email, since there is considerable doubt as to whether VM will continue the service at all.
