Email not sending

Is anyone else having trouble this evening? Our emails are failing to send. Have rebooted router and broadband working fine

  • If along with the error code 421 there is mention of netreport then:

    Go to https://netreport.virginmedia.com/netreport/ and:

    • select an abuse type of Email Sending Errors from drop down list
    • select an abuse form of Other from drop down list
    • paste the complete error message into the Log Evidence area
    • enter your name into My name field
    • enter your email address into Email address field
    • select Submit button

Hopefully de-listing will occur sooner rather than later but if not post back here to have the issue flagged to the forum team.

No I'm using Vm email accounts. We are receiving emails at home but still cannot send. I went onto Vm website and managed to send emails from our actual accounts and we received these at home.

I have recently subscribed to AVG VPN. Could this be preventing me from sending emails from Outlook?

But I don't have AVG on our PC and this has the same problem not sending emails today

It would be helpful to see what error code or message is returned by the SMTP server in this situation. From a desktop or laptop device open a Command Prompt in Window and enter the following where username:password is replaced with your email address and password, i.e. richard.branson@virginmedia.com:rotavator-racecar-tenet-repaper:

    curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com -u username:password

Do not post the resulting output here but instead review it for possible reported causes, i.e. VM error code; choosing to ignore this advice and posting the unredacted or incorrectly redacted output here will likely reveal your email address, password and / or public IP Address.

FYI if there is no issue then you should see the following output from the curl command:

    > AUTH PLAIN
    < 334
    > [Redacted]
    < 235 2.7.0 SMTP350 Authentication successful for user [Redacted]
    > HELP
< 214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help
214-2.0.0 This is cmsmtp ESMTP service help

214-2.0.0 To contact postmaster send email to postmaster@virginmedia.com.
< 214-2.0.0 For local information send email to Postmaster at your site.

    < 214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
214 2.0.0 end of HELP info
    * Connection #0 to host smtp.virginmedia.com left intact

Otherwise an unsuccessful result will look similar to the following:

    > AUTH PLAIN
    < 334
    > [Redacted]
    < 525 5.7.13 Authentication Denied (VM320)
    * Closing connection 0
    * TLSv1.2 (OUT), TLS alert, close notify (256):
    curl: (67) Login denied

Thanks I did that yesterday after reading other posts with the same problem as me. Is VM trying to get rid of people using email? Too much hassle and they just want to sell broadband and TV? Seems that way as they don't offer email to new customers anymore

Probably best to use the time between now and when the next issue occurs to migrate over to another email provider.

OK thanks. Our email has now been unblocked. It was blocked due to alleged suspicious activity although we have no idea what this was. We use AVG Antivirus on all devices and regularly run manual scans. No suggestion made to change or update account passwords.  I have responded to request more detail about what this 'activity' was. Many thanks for your help. Without this message board I would have been lost as VM first line and second line support were of no help whatsoever.  Clearly well above their level of knowledge. Thanks again!

Hi Grahham. It's 17 zJune and no the issue is not resolved and many not a few v. Customers have this issue. Just look at the number if different threads and posts! Our PC uses a full, version of outlook and this is unaffected.  People who use android tablets and phones have this issue. I do not use webmail. I have a software version of outlook installed. If I send an email between accounts it can take up to 12 hours to arrive. If I send another the previous only arrives. So the latest email each time is sitting in limbo somewhere! If I go onto vm webmail all the emails are there.

Hello Gareth. I have lost count of the number of threads complaining that VM have an email issue. It is now 17 June and it has not been resolved!!!! Have a look at the number of threads if you do not believe me. To repeat again. Our PC with full outlook works fine. My android tablet and phone do not. They have a software version of outlook. I do not use webmail. If I send an email between accounts it can take 12 hours to arrive. If I send another the previous email arrives. Same goes for receipt of external emails. The latest is in limbo somewhere. When another is sent the previous arrives. I think there must be more than 10 vm staff who claim to be trying to resolve this issue. May I suggest the best brains get together and then perhaps you will be able to solve the problem.  Or is it just that vm no longer provide email support as they do not provide it to new customers?
