Can't send an email - spam error message 554-554 5.2.0

Hello,

I have previously been able to send emails with attachments, however for the past 3 weeks when sending similar emails to email addresses previously used , I know get the error message 554-554 5.2.0 SMTP602, message contains spam content.

Can anybody please help me and advise as to how to stop this from happening.

Many thanks.

There is no magic bullet to prevent this I'm afraid.

Virgin Media scan all outgoing VM emails for spam content to stop their email servers from being used to send spam. So there is something is in those outgoing emails that has been identified by VM as being  potential spam, it's not necessarily down to the attachment.

There have been many reports from people getting that error message on this forum over  the last few years but I cannot remember any that were as a result of an email attachment.

So I suspect that the reason you are seeing that message is down to something in the text of the email itself rather than the attachment. Here are some ideas on how to test that:

    • You can quickly check that by trying to resend the same email again but without the attachment. I suspect that you will find it still fails to send.
    • If that test email does get sent without any errors try resending the email again but with the attachment. The spam filters do appear to be updated quite frequently so you may well find that the error has now been resolved anyway.
    • If you are still seeing the problem after checking that it's not caused by the attachment  a very common reason that the VM outgoing spam filters get triggered is because the email contains a URL link that has previously been flagged as suspicious.  That could be in the signature block of the email (if you use one), in the text of your email  or even in the original incoming email that gets sent automatically as part of a "Reply" message.
    • So if you still get that error when you try resending your email without the attachment, you could try deleting all the text of the original email from the bottom of your email and then resend your email.

Try that approach and post back how it goes.

  • Hi Coenoby,

    Thank you for you response.

I had five attachments to send to one person, with an email, so sent the attachments individually and I have identified the attachment that is causing the spam issue.  I can't see anything within that attachment that would cause the spam issue.

Have you any further advice please?

      Hi lisajane40

Thanks for posting and welcome to the community.
Apologies for the email issue. Can you elaborate on what the attachment is if that's OK? We maybe able to offer further guidance on that. Best,
