Left VM for now

As of the 9th my VM circuit has ceased to be, so I have left the fold for the second time.

Nothing to do with the service, I was lucky and very, very rarely had any issues with my broadband supply.  Most likely because I was always in modem mode  😉

Now running BT on FTTP 500/70 as the sole supply for broadband.

For the curious here's a wired speed test, I couldn't not do one, could I?  🙂

That all sounds very impressive. But all I need when working from home with sensitive data is a 99.999% reliable network. My Vigor 2927 with its APs gives me that.

All our network kit is invisible unless you stand on a stool.

But we do have some friendly tegenaria that keep the place clear of pests. 🙂

I had the "What would it take for you to come back to us?" call today from a charming Scottish lady.

When I said she would first have to fix the abysmal customer service, she admitted that she heard that frequently, but couldn't offer any change.

Must admit I felt rather sorry for her, having to listen to the same thing so often and knowing her reports up to management make no difference.  There must be nicer jobs she could do.

And today I had a second "how can we get you to come back to us" call.

I must say, the offer was extremely tempting, a lower price even than the introductory price for a new customer.  But I'm happy with the change I have made.  I did tell the chap that before I'd ever consider coming back I would have to see a considerable improvement in the customer service ratings on Trustpilot and Ofcom. Will that make a difference to his masters? Probably not.

LOL, I haven't had any of those calls. They could have kept me at the time, as I was lucky and the service just worked (bar one CMTS incident in the past where it was RIverDelta kit and needing replacing due to the single thread download speed issue). Alas, it was the insistence on offshore retentions of 18 month contract where there is no escape clause anymore penalty free, if the price increases were just too much. No common sense that I had been a customer for years and unlikely to cancel willy-nilly. Also, a load of messing me around and transferring me without warning and having to repeat security questions 3 times. Oh and trying to charge me MORE for out of fixed term contract than the quoted out of contract price!!! Only a few quid per month, but adds up over time.

Thought I'd come back on the discussion about Mesh vs separate access points. I did some tests.

I have a Draytek router connected directly to the EE ONT (550/70 service), feeding amongst many other things three Draytek AP's all ethernet connected.  Each is on a separate 80MHz channel to avoid co-channel interference in overlap areas.

With the mesh disconnected and running as three separate AP's I found that the test devices (Android and Apple) switched from one AP to another as expected when they were moved about, but they needed to find another AP with much higher signal level before they switched.  As long as they still had a good signal they stayed on the previous AP, even if the new signal was 20dB stronger.

Going back to the mesh setup, the switching to a stronger AP was much quicker in most cases, so the devices always used the stonger signal.

Whether the apparent benefit of the mesh is due to better intelligence in the router, in the APs or in the client devices I will leave as an exercise to the reader.  The mesh certainly gives 'better' operation in theory, but whether a user would notice any difference in practice, certainly in my case, is doubtful.

    Happy to hear any comments.

Interesting test.  Unfortunately two of my three AP's are too old to be set to a Mesh setup.  Maybe it's time to upgrade .....   ðŸ˜‰

Since Openreach added fibre to their pole in our road there are at least four new cables from it to houses that I know were previously on VM.

I suspect the remaining VM customers are now getting a better service, with less contention. But I'm not in a position to check it now.
