Excuse my ignorance but how do you identify which version of the Hub 5 you have?
I have had my Hub 5 since last August, to be fair I am impressed. Uptime is good, WiFi is solid, speeds are as specified. My previous Hub was in modem mode with my own router due to connection problems with various devices. Not had those problems with the Hub 5 so sticking with it.
To add more to the confusion there are two hardware versions (1.1 & 1.2 on the same firmware) of the DOCSIS Hub 5 looking like this ...
Then there is the HUB 5x / Sagemcom F5685LGB-VMB for XGSPON/PIA the rear side of this model is shown below, note the fibre connection as well as the 10Gbps port.
I have a 5X arriving at the end of the month. Can I ask what the fibre cable plugs into at the other end (white / green cable). I'm asking as I want to know if I can simply buy a longer fibe patch cable in future to re-position the hub if required. I guess the other end is the external termination box the engineer will install. Photos would be great. Thanks.
At the ISP end the connection is in a street cabinet or on a telegraph pole running without joints direct to the back of the Hub 5x
Sounds like a recipe for disaster? So they don't use any form of outside box or splice the fibre at the property? Seems really an odd way to do things don't you think.
The fibre cable from the street chamber is terminated on the outside of your property, the fibre is patched here then passes into your home to a wall socket, then a patch cable from the wall socket to the port on the 5X router. They supplied a 10m one so I could locate the router elsewhere.
Just had my old SH3 swapped out for a SH5, due to the SH3 running at 500Mbp/s and getting downloading issues.
Have to say, went in like a dream. Once engineer provisioned new hub, tested speed, all good. Put it into Modem mode, connected to my Asus router, and solid 500mbs on both wireless and wifi. So much better than the SH3, which IMHO is really pushing it when getting 500mbs through it.
Just done a 24 hour BQM and apart from a a blip where I switched my new SH5 over to my UPS at 4pm, it look good, only two small blips.
One thing i found funny, read an article from 2021 where virgin Media talked about the launch of the new Superhub 5, and that they wanted all current customers upgraded to it. How thing have changed, now you only get one if you take the 1 Gig service, when they know the SH3 is not fit for purpose on anything past M350.
Jeff Dodds, Chief Operating Officer at VMO2, said:
“At Virgin MediaO2we don’t stand still and are constantly working to give our customers the latest and most innovative technology to suit their digital needs now and in the future.
We are excited to give our existing customers first access to the Hub 5, powered byWiFi6 technology, which will provide even faster WiFi speeds and help unleash the full potential of new devices from next-gen games consoles to the newest smartphones in their homes.”
Nexfibre currently building near me so thinking of joining. Can anyone tell me whether the superhub 5X supports port forwarding and/or upnp and whether it does so in a pretty standard way (or with caveats to be aware of)?
