Superhub 3 Red Light Modem Mode

Hi all...

So I've just switched to modem mode and connected to my new wifi router (as the wifi from the superhub 3 is poor) doing so I've now got a solid red light, online indicates it's overheating? the thing is it's not moved from the past 5 months? without a overheat issue.

I've tried switching on and off still the same results! but surely being in the same ventilated area performing less (just modem mode) should be less stress on the hub right?

luckily it's currently working ok at the moment but it's only been in modem mode for about an hour, but I don't want it to konk out all of a sudden!

any ideas?

Thanks in advanced.

    Hi stevenjp90

You can relax.  The  red (or magenta) light colouring on hub 3 when in modem mode denotes it's working fine and is no longer in router mode and is not a sign of overheating.

Thank you for your reply but, Magenta should give more purply notes in the light? (Just like the reply button on this forum?)... this is definitly red like traffic light red.

Looking at the virgin media site shows the following for the 2 different lights:

Modem Mode shows as Purple (or Magenta) with Green phone and Internet lights displaying

      https://www.virginmedia.com/help/how-to/broadband/hub-lights/purple-solid-power-green-solid-internet-phone-lights-hub-3

Overheating as just a Solid Red Light

I'll check the site later if it's not been updated to what you're saying then I suppose I'll have to see if I can get back in touch with Virgin about it, got fed up of waiting yesturday haha.

      Thanks again.

Set the Hub to Router mode.  What colour is the LED?   As noted, in modem mode the LED is magenta, but as these old Hubs age, so does the LED.   What is red, may supposed to be magenta.

The important bit to note is if the red LED persists after a pinhole reset, the Hub should be swapped out. This red LED is the overheat warning and should be working correctly.

They are very cheap LEDs in the hubs and can give a range of colours. Only sure fire way to check it out is to put the hub back to router mode, if the LED then remains red the hub will need replacing. If it goes back to white/yellow/orange the hub is fine and you can resume modem mode.

  • I think mine has just gone from magenta to red tonight - at the same time as I replaced the ageing TP-Link modem/router/WiFi I was using in WAN mode as my Wifi/Router (+DHCP server) - when this happened I thought I might have messed up and assigned the same IP address to the new router as the VM Sub-par3 Hub was using - but taking all the other gear out of the loop and connecting a PC direct to the first port on the SH3 as was previously connected to the old/new modem/router/WiFi box still left it on red. Changing the SH3 back to "normal" mode got me the expected continuous white power led and the solid green network and phone ones - yet changing it back to "modem" mode has not changed things back to magenta from red.

OTOH for a magenta output that means that red and blue LED chips inside the multi-coloured power one must be switched on - and as far as I can tell there is no other state - other than "modem" mode - that would use the blue chip - assuming that the white is a separate fourth chip (the others being red, green and blue). Of course if that is not the case then white would use just all of red and green and blue at the same time - which wouldn't match up with the idea that the blue one has just died on me...

Of note is that with that red light and just this PC connected to the SH3 I AM able to post this message - so something is still working...
