Replace virgin media hub 3.0 with NETGEAR R8000 Nighthawk X6 but keep VM LAN ports for TV etc

I live in a bungalow so thought I might get better WiFi putting a router in the loft connected to the VM Hub 3.0.

However the VM hub is connected to the TV, AV receiver etc so I want to keep the VM LAN ports.

I have a NETGEAR R8000 Nighthawk X6, but its IP is 192.168.1.0 and the VM hub says it has a range for IPs of 192.168.0.10 with 245 allowed clients, doe this mean the VM hub will simply never see the nighthawk?

I had though I could just enable the NH as an AP with the old VM SSID and turn off the VM hu WiFi. But no dice it seems. The NH Internet light oes orange but no connection.  I tried all of the VM hub LAN ports for the NH (just in case) but still ni dice.

Am I trying to do something too difficult by keeping the VM LAN ports with the NH elsewhere in the house?

Thank you,

RS

Using the VM Hub in Router mode ( i.e. Wi-Fi & LAN ports are enabled )  and the Netgear R8000 in Access Point mode should work fine & is a normal configuration option.  The instruction manual will detail how to do this.

Any network port on the Hub 3 will be fine.

If this is not working, pay close attention to the configuration of the Netgear R8000, if in doubt, reset it and start the process from scratch.

Personally I would get a couple of PoE access points, and a PoE switch.  Site the switch at the Hub and run the PoE cables up into the roofspace.  As a bungalow, it "should" be easy to fit AP's.  They are fitted like smoke alarms into the ceiling, and get power from the cables, so no power socket needed.  You can site the AP's as you see fit to distribute Wifi around the property.

Thank you for the idea, but the Nighthawk was £40 and well reccomended.

just bring the NETGEAR next to the hub and change hub to modem mode

I believe Modem mode would disable the LAN ports and I cannot use the NH ports if it is in the loft,

The bungalow is long and thin and I want to get coverage to the rear of the house so best place for the NH for now is in the loft.  I'm not going to run cables into the living room, it is just not practical.  If I can keep the VM LAN ports, then all good.  It is a pity to lose a number of the NH features, but for now I think it is what I need,

  • Well it was easy enough to do, but I would not say the results were anything spectacular.  Signal is OK, but not all over the house and there seems to be a huge delay in connecting.  I tried adding a USB hard drive with all the music on to to router and although I can "see" the HD, I cannot see anything on it.  USB 3.0 does not even register the HD.

Might just as well have not bothered really.  Shame, all the reviews loved it.

The loft is a damn sight closer to most rooms than the living room was.  Center of the house, no more than 10 ft up.  This is a bungalow,
