Physically installing a WAP

Hi,

Newbie to the forums, just upgraded from 350mbps to 1 Gbps broadband For coverage I had been using a TP link mesh system but its been patchy at best and thought to get the maximum from my new speed I'd look into a WAP.

Now this may seem like a really daft question but from what I understand the best way to install this would be to run a cable through the ceiling and then ceiling mount the WAP centrally in my house. However how am I getting a cable from my router to the loft as like most UK home my walls are solid brick and I obviously don't want a cable running up my wall. I've seen a couple of tutorials on youtube but they are all Americans with their paper mâché walls so much easier to run cables into.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Don't forget you can run external grade Cat 6 cable on the outside and up into the roof space.  I did this for a family member.  Clip the cable behind the downspout. for example.  Use a PoE WAP for ease of install as well.  I have 3 EAP 610's fitted and they are very easy to manage from an App or via a Browser.

Don't be in a rush to dump your mesh, best as always is to use Ethernet for backhaul with each node wired to a port of your hub. I think most TP-Link mesh units also support daisy-chaining, so you can wire a node to the next node without a problem.

You are going to have to do drilling and cable can be hidden up a wall, e.g. inside trunking, behind concealer tape or chased in the wall.

Replacing a multi node Wi-Fi Mesh with a single Wireless Access Point does not sound like a route to comprehensive Wi-Fi coverage.

There are no positions in our house where a single AP could be installed and expected to have good service in a dozen rooms & two levels.

To cover our home we have a VM Hub in Router mode + a pair of TP-Link Wireless Access points.

Do please feel free to keep the thread update with how to you get on with the installation and hopefully members of our forum who have been in a similar position will be able to offer further advice.
