Moving hose need Wifi with mesh option

Does Virgin Media have a proper Wifi Mesh solution that works with their latest internet solutions?

I am moving in to a new house soon which offers both Virgin Media XGS-PON connections, or BT Openreach style FTTP.

I was thinking of trying out Virgin for a while as we never had the option before.

However it's a big house and we will probably require a reliable and good mesh wifi solution (or worst case running a couple of hard wired ethernet points at opposite ends of the house but I prefer not to do this).

After some previous questions that I asked here, I got the impression that using 3rd party mesh solutions with the Virgin latest router is a bad idea as it doesn't have a modem mode (yet?) and I will probably have issues and not get best performance if I add that on.

I know Virgin provides the possibility to add boosters, but is that a proper mesh solution or is it just "boosters" - I'm not fully familiar with the technology but my impression is that proper a "mesh" system is different and better than just having a few boosters here and there?

  • Without going into all of the ins and outs (widely documented on here) you would almost certainly be better off with an OR FTTP connection until VM /Nexfibre sort their Xgs-pon act out.

The WiFi pods create a mesh network, they are dual-band and provide WiFi 6. As always, Ethernet-connected devices enable wired backhaul for best results. If there are areas in your home with no WiFi or weak signal then under its WiFi guarantee with WiFi Max VM will send you a free pod and up to two more if necessary.

If you're not eligible for WiFi Max you can add it to your broadband package at a cost of £8 a month add-on or at no extra cost for Ultimate Oomph, Gig1 and Volt customers.

  • Hello Javert,

Thanks for posting in regard to your upcoming move and the choices available for your services.

As Roger_Gooner has advised, we do offer Pod's via our broadband services and these are free as described in their reply, more information on Wi-Fi Max can be found here, currently XGS Pon customers receive a Hub 5x and at the time of writing this, it's doesn't currently support modem mode.

This would mean any third-party mesh systems you may be looking at wouldn't work at this time. It is a feature the team are working to add but we don't have a date on when this will be available so just something worth bearing in mind.
