Hub help please

Can someone advice please,

I have to buy a new computer as my present one is very old . I currently have a virgin hub 3.0. The new computers I am looking at all support  WiFi 6. The virgin hub information page says a Hub 3 supports upto WiFi 5.  Hub 5 supports WiFi 6.
I have live chatted to virgin and they say hub 3 does support WiFi 6 and if it doesn’t and I quote

“Rest assured that, the Hub 3 is certainly compatible and would work with the WIFI 6, if it is not working, then we would take the responsibility for this and get the Hub changed upon checks conducted by the technician.”

However at present I am on a rolling month out of contract having downgraded my package as the prices were getting very costly.   I have  also seen that Virgin will charge a set fee and installation costs to have a new hub. I appreciate I now have  a medium internet speed (M250) and have read that a hub 5 would only be an option if I upgraded to faster speeds which at present I don’t wish to do. and there are no hub upgrade options on my account .
Can anyone who is technically minded be able to tell simply what my options are, my daughter has been helping me as this is all very confusing  as I can’t get a new computer unless I know what hub I need  to support the WiFi as there appears to be conflicting official information on Virgin media’s help and support pages. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Perhaps you are misunderstanding?  A new PC with WiFi 6 will work with the Hub 3, so don’t think it’s WiFi 6 that is the problem.

Wifi 6 means it can be backward compatible with Wifi 5 (like USB) ...most of the time given this is a VM hub where compatibility can go side ways.

If you wanted to you can get a 3rd party wifi 6 router with 1Gb ports and put hub in modem mode

Really no point in chasing WiFi 6 with your 250mb tier.  A Hub 3 will suffice.

We have Wi-Fi 6 capable HP laptop, it works perfectly with our Hub 3.

No need to be concerned about WI-Fi compatibility when buying a new laptop / desktop.

  • Thanks for replying, it seems that a new computer has WiFi 6 as standard so I’ll need to look again with my daughter to find one compatible with the present hub.

All new computers with have Wi-Fi that works fine with the Hub 3.

Focus more on do you fancy a silver or a blue laptop etc ... it is a more relevant decision !
