Gig1 Speeds.. Technically not possible?

Hi all.

Elements of my point have probably been mentioned before and I have done a search but there is conflicting information

I have recently moved and my previous address had Full Fibre to the premises, I was getting  1gig up and 1 gig down. When moving I found that virgin was my only option for full fibre so went with their fastest package GIG1 which gave me 1130down and some pathetic amount up.

I have a Ubiquiti network for beyond my router UDM Pro SE with 10gig and a Mac with 10gig & NAS with 10gig, so I was hoping to be able to get that full 1130 from Virgin. I noticed the 10G port on the HUB5 so thought that would be fine connected to the 10G port on the UDM and then to my Mac & NAS.

However the 10g port on the HUB5 doesn't seem to work and the HUB can't go into modem mode.

I know Virgin say the speed is measured at the router and doing the samknows test I'm getting the full speed there but are Virgin technically making it impossible for me to get the full speed of my package on any device?

Using the Gigabit port I'm getting around 880 which is a way off the 1130.

Welcome people thoughts and when/if things will change or if I've totally got it wrong!

Thanks

Dean

If your not happy you should downgrade 1Gb only happens if everything is in place where you are.

Problem is the next package down is 500 with only 52up.. as pathetic as the upload is with gig1 its better than 52!

plus..everything is in place. I have the network to handle far faster speeds, virgin is providing faster than 1gig speeds but their router doesn't allow it.

wait for modem mode but their are other things that stop you from 1Gb

  • I'm using the UDM Pro SE, connected to the 10GbE port of the 5x via the 2.5GbE port of the SE (port 9 I think), and my speed tests are 1Gb+.

Admittedly, I haven't tried using one of the SPF+ ports connected to the 10GbE port of the 5x.

What SPF+ unit are you using? Is the SE on that latest firmware release? There are lots of reports on the Ubiquiti forums about the SPF+ port not recognising some units correctly.

  • If the 10G port isn't working you have a faulty HUB and it needs replacing.

Technically you can get 1130Mbps across multiple devices at the same time, which is how VM advertise Gig1.

Just tested it again, lan cable from 10g port to UDM and no connection, I assume its ok to have it used at the same time as the others...

Yep, the 10g port should be fine to use at the same time as the 1g ports.

  • So.. this is odd. If i put a lan cable from the 10g port to a 1G port on the UDM it works and recognises the Internet. If I put a lan cable from the 10g port to an SFP adapter to the 109g SFP port on the UDM it doesn't recognise the internet. so the 10g port is working but not with an SFP adapter in the UDM

  • Sorted - Dodge SFP+ module. changed and 1gig speeds working. Thanks for the help.D
