Flashing red light on SH5, but internet appears to work

I've had an issue with my SuperHub 5 for a few weeks now.  If I restart the SH5, it will go through the startup process as normal (flashing white light, turning to steady after 2-3 minutes), but it now flashes a red light for about a minute after starting up.

Recognising the red light wasn't good, I contacted Virgin Media broadband support, who sent an engineer out who replaced the wiring and splitters inside my house  But after all that work, the engineer still got a flashing red light, so they decided to replace my old SH5 and it's power supply with a new one from their van.  After registering the new SH5, it too showed a flashing light.

I should add that while the engineer was testing, only the power cable and coax cable was connected to the SH5.  My phone line and ethernet devices were disconnected throughout testing and when the flashing red light reared it's ugly head.

The engineer left my premises saying they've done all they can and that my signal levels look good.  But to be honest, I wasn't best pleased about lack of explanation.  As far as they were concerned, my internet was working and the flashing red light was just a niggle I'd have to live with.

Tonight (two weeks later), the red light started flashing without any apparent cause.  The network logs didn't show any messages at same time this happened.

I will do my best to post my the SH5 stats as it currently stands.  Perhaps somebody might spot something that I could sign post the next engineer to.

VM have not got a clue what Flashing red light mean in router mode I get a green light in modem mode. The one who does the firmware likely linked the Flashing red light too “Your wifi device is too far away bring it closer”.

Yes, I've powered the SH5 on and off a few times recently.

I have another engineer coming out in a few days, so perhaps I'll know more shortly.

        Hi hammic
Welcome back to the Community Forums.
Sorry to hear of your concerns with the flashing light on your router.
Please do let us know if you've any further concerns after your appointment. We'll be here to help on the Community Forums if needed.

  • I can't help with this but has there been any recent Hub5 firmware updates? I ask as my router now goes through the 30-60 second flashing red LED on reboot and it never used to do that and there is more than one thread mentioning this boot sequence. I have no internet issues and BQM is fine. Until the last few weeks I'd never seen a flashing red light on my Hub.

  • Hello, I have the flashing red light for about a minute on my SH5 too after restart but internet works fine. The first time happened on Friday or Saturday night, suddenly red light flashed for maximum a minute I think but internet worked fine. Today I turned off the power and waited for 5 minutes, turned it back on all good after restart, flashing white light, then flashing red light and then it’s the usual white light. I checked my BQM all seems ok. I can say that the speed it’s even a bit better, on my IPhone 16 Pro Max I previously got 1170Mbps now I got 1199Mbps download and 106 or 107Mbps upload but during the test it goes up to 120Mbps. So, as many people started to have this I think it’s not an issue as long as the internet works normally. It definitely is something with the software  of the Hub too. Fun fact when I go now on my phone on Safari to the hub website, 192.168.0.1 it says that connection is not private and that the website might be impersonated. I’ve attached a screenshot with this. It does like this on any other browser or device.

Just posting as a continuation and to confirm that this red light issue is still ongoing.

Last night, during normal use, the red light flashed for no apparent reason.  Again, nothing was shown at this time in the network log - basically, as though nothing had happened.

I am beginning to notice that odd time the red light does flash, is late evening, from around 10pm until midnight.

Is there anything on a timer that may be interfering?  Can you move the power supply to another socket, even on a temporary long extension lead?  Do any other mains powered devices show any signs of issues, flickering etc.?

Only asking as I used to get electrical "brown outs" where we live, and had to get a UPS.  Fast forward a few years, and the area had now got a new sub station transformer fitted. The power drops have ceased, but I've still kept the UPS.

I get virtually no power cuts where I live.  I believe the last power cut was maybe 10 years ago, possibly even longer than that.

There's no timers in my house, let alone plugged in, so I'm absolutely certain it's nothing on a timer.

I will try the SuperHub 5 on another socket, with the use of an extension and report back.  That's a good suggestion worth investigating.  If nothing else, it would help to rule out the power in the house.

I'm thinking of trying to power the SuperHub from a power bank, but I don't think there's any suitable adapters that would let me do this.  That would definitely help to rule out power in my house as well as the SuperHub's PSU.
