Adding Nighthawk Router to Hub5x

Hi. We changed to Virgin in June this year & had the Hub 5x installed & everything is good with the set up with the exception on the Wiz products (Similar to Philips Hue). Every plug adapter & lamp was connected individually to my old Netgear Nighthawk Rax200 router and there are many. Therefore I would like to connect my old router to the network so I won't have to reconnect each & every plug & lamp to the new router. I have tried plugging the Nighthawk in, via the Hub 5x & the ethernet network around the house, in different locations but it wont give wifi. I have an earlier Netgear Nighthawk X6 plugged in in my office/garage which works as an ethernet switch & stand alone wifi network. This just plugged in & worked. Can anyone advise on how to get it working? I have some knowledge of changing the admin settings on routers but as simple as possible please. Many thanks

Change the Hub 5x to offer the same Wi-Fi SSID and Password as is expected by all your kit and then they should all reconnect to Wi-Fi.

You don't mention how your  Netgear Nighthawk Rax200 is configured, but to work with the Hub 5x is would be easier if was in Access Point mode and it will need to be configured on the 192.168.0.xxx IP range to match the Hub 5x DHCP server.

The RAX200 will need to be in access point mode with a static IP address outside the Hub’s DHCP scope.  Something like 192.168.0.5  Gateway 192.168.0.1. Set the SSID on the Hub to be the same as the RAX200.  Reboot your IoT devices.  They should pickup the same WiFi SSID and the Hub 5 should issue out DHCP leases.

You just connect the WAN port of the Nighthawk Router to the hub I don't know what the other two was thinking, think they lost there marbles.

Not on my last two Routers I used as Access Points, they were connected via the LAN ports.

Thats because you think thats the right way which its not you got a router you use the WAN port be it hub 5 in modem mode or hub 5x in router mode.

Double NAT is a rabbit hole that I have no intention of recommanding to anyone.

If a competent person, understanding the issues, chooses to go down that route that is fine, but we will assume they will not be returning to this forum to ask for assistance with solving failures  with VOIP, TV Streaming, CCTV kit, office VPNs and to quell the raging of their teenage children when online games randomly fail to work as expected.

  • Thanks guys. Sorry if I've caused arguements. The Rax 200 is still set up as it was switched off when the fibre went live. No settings have been changed. I have plugged it into the wan ports on the 5x & getting "no internet access". I have two switch panels feeding ethernet round the house & it's the same everywhere so I'm guessing it's a problem with the settings on the router clashing. I looked into the missing modem mode on the 5X & this could have been so easy had it been available. I've seen the double NAT posts but don't understand what this is (Sorry). My gateway for the heating controls works fine plugged into the WAN ports so I'm going to try & put the RAX200 in Access point mode. I can't log into it at the moment either (probably as it's offline?) so I'm going to try & plug it into my laptop. I will have a play later today (Sunday) & see what I can find out. There is a video on Youtube on how to set it up in modem mode but as three people work from home in the week I'm worried I'll screww up the settings if I go too deep into it.

Maybe the WAN port is setup for PPPoE from your old ISP?

How bloody stupid am I. Yes it was set up for the old provider, DOH. Set it for VM & it's plugged into the WAN & seems to be working. No sign of Double NAT yet (not that I know what to look for). Most of the house uses ethernet anyway.
