5x Hub / Deco x20 Mesh

Hi all,

I have just had 500MB fibre installed and I've attached the hub to my existing x20 mesh network. Turned off wifi at the hub and turned Deco to Access Points.

The first deco x20 (primary) unit is connected to the hub and then via Cat 6 to a TP-link switch from where 3 cat 6 cables connect to three other x20 units. Under ADSL this was all working nicely.

The Deco app reports a download speed of 490Mbps (yay!) from the internet connection. Items connected to that hub can get good downloads but not the same (phone gets 300Mbps, Fire TV gets 240Mbps).

Items connected to other access points (not the primary) get much less - < 100 Mbps.

Is this deliberate throttling by the Hub? If so, what can I do about it?

I did try setting the Hub up in Modem Mode, but it didn't work (couldn't get a signal to the Primary hub in Router mode through any of the ports on the Hub).

Help!!!!

Is this deliberate throttling by the Hub?

You know the Hub 5x is working ok.

The Wi-Fi hops of the Deco mesh are loosing the speed.
Using a much slower ADSL connection before this would not have been seen,
perhaps the mesh nodes are too far apart.

I would leave the Hub 5x Wi-Fi enabled, think of it as an extra dual band Wi-Fi 6 access point for free.

All the mesh nodes are hard wired via a switch, so wifi range isn't the issue.

I've ended up removing the mesh and just using the Hub. Even the poorest speeds (200Mbs in the far bedrooms) is better than the mesh.

How fast was you going on ADSL?

Was it a 10/100 switch by chance ?
That would limit the speed of the mesh nodes.

      Yes it is!

It's definitely the Switch that is at issue. Are you suggesting a different switch would work better?

Current switch is the TP-Link LS109P

That switch has 10/100 ethernet ports, as suggested, which means your APs will be limited to around 90Mbps.

Do you need a switch with POE (Power Over Ethernet) for any devices plugged into it?

There is an odd issue with this thread, depending on how I come and look at it
changes if I can see my last post or I can not. Other posts are missing too.

At the moment I can not see the posts where the op restated the switch as being a model LS108GP with is a Gigabit device.

  • Hello there @Client62,

These forums also perform very strangely for me also.

I made a thread in the Speed subforum, and it is displaying very strangely for me, with many posts missing (not visible or showing in the thread).

I think this has something to do with users regularly using the using the "Reply" button that is nested in the last visible post (a bad idea), as opposed to the "Leave a Reply" box at the bottom (seemingly a much better idea).

There seems to be some kind of glitch when too many "nested reply" posts occur.  The result is that large swathes of posts can become invisible, after they have been made.

This is very frustrating, and prevents useful knowledge transfer and interaction between users and VM colleagues alike.

I am hopeful that some strange aspects of the forum's behaviour can be fixed.

I have found that missing posts can usually be found by changing the oldest/newest selector at the top, and looking for the 'Show More' link between posts.

But you can't be sure that all posts have been revealed.

I find the new forum software lacking, and that's being polite.  Another nod to the "app" generation in look and feel.  Total wasted space and no page navigation at the bottom, just endless scrolling.  I find sometimes when scrolling down, the browser stalls and puts you back at the start ....
