V6 box won't record since 360 upgrade

Hi All,

This 360 change is possibly the worst software 'upgrade' in technology history. Latest issue: I have 2 V6 boxes, both upgraded to 360. However, when I schedule a recording, I get an ! icon next to the recording on the Recordings screen and it says there was an error recording the show.

I have restarted the box countless times. Occasionally a show appears to have recorded correctly but when I attempt to play it back, I get a 'Playback failed' message.

This is becoming beyond frustrating. Any help would be much appreciated.

Some V6’s don’t upgrade well at all.  Have you tried a factory reset on the boxes?

When settings recordings that fail do you also see an error code such as CS2200

Since you have updated two V6 boxes to the TV360 format then they both have hard drives for recordings.  One of them will be the default recording box so all recordings will be made on that box unless you choose for the recording to be  made on the 'secondary' box.

Both boxes need to be on either Fast Start or Active Start  which can be set up under Settings > System > Standby power consumption.  (If the box you want the recording to be made on has been powered off or set to Eco Start then the recording will fail)

You can fine tune the recordings between boxes by clicking on the red Record button, then on the next screen click Advanced Options, then on the next screen click on Choose TV Box, then select the box you want the recording to be made on, then click on Record. That program will then be recorded on that box going forward, even if the default recording box is one of the others.

When setting up a new series link go to Advanced and select which box you want the recording to be made on. It will then be recorded on that box going forward. If though you've already got a series link set up for a particular program and want to change it so it will record on the other box then you need to cancel that series link, and then set it up to record again, using the advanced options when you press record.

The 360 box automatically lists all recording irrespective of the box they were made on.
You can however view the planned and actual recordings on an individual box when going to Recordings > Recorded > View All > and then clicking on Recorded (to the right of the Search icon) and then click on 'Recorded on this Virgin TV box'.  The interface will then list the recordings made on that particular box along with percentage space used on that box (you  will need to do that each time you use that interface as the box doesn't save that option)

On the box that the recordings have been made on do you experience any problems if you pause a live TV program for a few minutes and then play it back?  If so that can be an indicator of a hard drive problem which can effect recordings.  If so I suggest that you make recordings on the other box for now and perform a factory reset on the box that has issues.

To factory reset go to Settings (the cog at the end of the Home menu) > System > Factory Reset. It's actually misnamed and only a partial system reset and not a complete factory reset. You are given 2 options
    Keep Recordings
    Format Disk
Select Keep Recordings, which means you won't lose your recordings, and any planned recordings, or series links you've set up. You may have to sign into your apps such as iPlayer, Prime, Netflix and ITVX again.

      Thanks for the detailed reply.

I can confirm both boxes are on Active start. It seems one of the boxes, which is I suppose the primary box as it is the one with the input adjacent to the router is working OK. However the second V6 box, which is still cable connected, is showing the issues I mentioned above with recording.

I have tried the process you described on both boxes, but on neither box do I have an option to choose the box that is going to action the recording.

Not sure what else to try. The second box seems to work OK apart from the recording issue.

        Hi again DeadpoolsFist

I suggest performing a factory reset on the second V6 box if that one has recordings stored on it which are causing problems.

If you go to the EPG and select a program to record that you don't have any planned recordings for, for example Four in a Bed on 4HD, click Record and on the pop up screen select Advanced Actions > Choose TV box > and select  either of your boxes. That program would then be recorded on that box going forward.

Also you can open  the TVGo app and select the head and shoulders icon, then choose Settings > Recordings.  Scroll down that page and you can choose your Default for Recordings from there.

Bet the OP didn't have to any of this before they 'upgraded'

No I did not. I work in tech, so I get this stuff isn't easy, but this is the most undercooked software roll out I've ever seen. And looking at the age of the other posts and comments, its a year or so in as well. Shambolic.

It's been more like 5 years since the 360 box was first released in the UK (and the system has been around elsewhere for much longer), so it's not a shambolic release, just a poorly designed system.

Although, on the plus side, at least it's better than the Stream box which is now replacing it.

    A small point, but you now have 2 x TV360-masters, formerly V6

V6 refers to the boxes running TiVo-software. TV360 refers to them running Horizon-software. TiVo & Horizon are fundamentally different.
