360 box video settings

I have a 360 box and a new 4K TV.

I only use the 360 box for HD channels, any 4K channels I watch directly through my TV.

I have had the settings on the 360 box set to auto, but after playing around with it, I found that I get a slightly better picture when the 360 box is set to just 1080.

I looked online and there have been a few postings recommending the box be set to 1080 as the TV my be trying to upscale the picture.

Any thoughts on this please?

Also, out of interest, why is the colour depth greater on 1080, than on 4K? 12 bits as opposed to 10 bits.

Thanks.

Your UHD TV has to display a resolution of 2160p, so content below this must be upscaled either by the box or TV. The auto setting is best for most but if you insist on using the box only for HD channels (why?) then you can set the resolution to 1080p and the TV will upscale to 2160p (only makes sense if the TV is a better upscaler than the box).

Your understanding of colour depth is wrong. Resolution, e.g., 1080p, refers to the number of pixels on the screen (width x height) whereas colour depth refers to the information within each pixel. They are separate but often related concepts.

1080p content and displays typically use 8-bit colour. The real benefit of 10-bit (and 12-bit) colour comes with HDR content and as HDR is almost exclusively delivered in 4K (or higher) resolutions, the need for 10-bit is inherently tied to 4K content and displays. 12-bit colour is rarer and primarily associated with Dolby Vision HDR on compatible 4K (and increasingly 8K) systems. It's not a standard for 1080p.

  • Your TV probably does upscale better than the V6 / 360 box, this hardware was released December 2016 with possibly only minor version updates to components.

TV manufacturers are regularly updating their TV's to improve the picture, I know that my LG upscales better than the 360 box, less artifacting than the 360 but I do have the box set to auto as I watch the Sport in HDR.
