Which error code do you see? For example CS2200?
Have you checked the error codes online virginmedia.com/check/tv-error-codes and followed the instructions?
What happens if you pause live TV and then play it back?

Sorry to hear of the issues you've been experiencing with the set top box since a recent power cut.
Are you please able to confirm what error code is being populated?
With this, have you been issued with an error messages at all?
It may be worth looking into the error code via this link, and see if any suggested basic troubleshooting will allow for the issue to be resolved.

Hi, I've tried that still the same won't save any recordings after switching box off.

don't want a engineer as I will have to take time off work

Hi. The code was cs2217 but it doesn't come up for everything sometimes it stops playing and says delete.

If powering off the box with either the switch on the back of the box or at the plug is deleting your recordings then the box is faulty and needs replacing.
Virgin don't often just send out replacement boxes just in case it's not the box that's faulty or there are any other issues. It also allows the box to get back into the repair loop sooner.
As japitts said you can get a weekend appointment (Saturday).
