Re: Scam Virgin Media calls

I had exactly the same thing today, with other callers audible in the background, like a big operation. I challenged what sounded like an Indian woman on some technicalities, which caused her to get flustered, but she then continued with the same script. I interrupted her with "You're not from Virgin Media; you're trying to scam me." To which the line went dead. The caller's number was [REMOVED]

So how do they know who are the Virgin Media customers?? Inside job?

[MOD EDIT: number edited in case it's an innocent number being spoofed]

OFCOM publishes lists of which telecoms companies own which blocks of numbers. This gives the scammers a good first guess who the provider is when they place a call.

Their luck fails though if the customer has ported the phone number elsewhere but that won't stop the scammer trying their scamming routine and storyline.

VM does not make outbound unsolicited tech support calls so, if you get such a call, it is always a scam.

Best approach is to hang up without talking to them.

  • Hi Ianpb,

Thanks for your post and apologies to hear you're receiving these sorts of calls.

Most of these types of calls are from an auto dialler that automatically dials each number until they come across an active one. At that point you're put through to an 'agent' and it's just a coincidence that they've reached a Virgin Media customer. I think the best way to be is to stay vigilant and if you're ever unsure then hang up and call us direct.

If you are sure any are scams or fraud then make sure you are reporting the calls to Action Fraud UK here so they can get as much information as possible to close the scammer down.

It's also worth registering for the Telephone Preference Service here. It is the UK’s only official ‘Do Not Call’ register for landlines and Mobile numbers and is free. That should help reduce the number of calls you receive.

Finally we have a handy page with loads more help and advice too. You can view that here

If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know.

    Thanks,

In my experience, as well as many others, Action Fraud UK is absolutely useless.

I have asked the mods to remove the posted number, as it has been cloned from a genuine user that has nothing to do with the scam.

I escalated it on the 22/6 for this, but looks like it was not done until today.

  • Telephone Preference Service is useless, still get un wanted phone calls

if you cancel virgin media contract at the end of it, retentions can call you ?

i have had problems with virgin for last 6 months (over) and whenever i have to contact them i get indian voice scam call on land line or email

but also my landline number NO ONE HAS NOT EVEN FAMILY

as i use mobile like most

but unless you are threatening to leave virgin you have to go through foreign call centres

and i think they are not secure at all

just now had an auto one at 6.04pm lol

which is when i usually get virgin replies/calls

    funny that
