Phone line issues.

We’ve had some work done at home and I think the wire for the phone line has been accidentally cut. I’ve purchased the cable for the phone line to go into the router but still nothing. Constantly engaged when ringing in and no phone tone when dialling out. Can you assist please. Lisa
