Landline keeps ringing at night

The landline at my parents' house has started ringing at odd times over night, eg 2am.

There will be one ring, then it stops.  Only to ring again about 1 minute later.  This can go on for about 1 hour.  The handset doesn't record a number, but calling 1471 does, and there has been at least 2 different numbers.

I contacted customer services and they insisted that a technician had to visit.  He knew nothing about the calls and just wanted to upgrade them to VOIP.  That has been postponed for a week or so, and I wasn't convinced that "you'll never have another phone problem" was totally true!

It has got to the point that my parents are switching off their phone over night, but that isn't really a solution.

Any thoughts?  They really can't be without a landline because of various medical issues.

  • Thanks for reaching out to us on our Community Forums Foxhill34, and welcome back!

Sorry to hear of the landline issue your parents have been experiencing.

We would aim to eventually have all landline users switched over to our Voip services - due to a change/upgrade in technology.

Can you please keep us updated with the visit and if this does indeed resolve this issues for us?

    Thanks,

  • I used to have this problem. It was robot spam calls. As I prefer the ergonomics of a proper phone for phone calls I decided to divert all calls immediately to voicemail so no ringing and everything is screened. Works fine if you are only concerned with making outbound calls via the landline.

This phenomenon has been mentioned on here before. Past topics just disappear off to PM though with no explanation of the cause (though robot spam dialling seems likely).

Have you looked at the calling features on your parents' phone?

Many cordless systems (esp. BT phones) have a 'do not disturb' feature on them which keeps the phone silent at certain times of day/night.

The 'do not disturb' feature call be used in conjunction with a VIP setting in the phone address book. By marking certain callers in the phone address book as VIPs, the phone will allow VIP callers to break through the 'do not disturb' setting so at night the phone will remain silent unless it is a call from a known person who has been pre-approved as a VIP.

I have used this device in the past for maximum call screening capabilities

and it worked very well indeed.

Thanks - I will check if I can enable a do not disturb overnight.
