This phenomenon has been mentioned on here before. Past topics just disappear off to PM though with no explanation of the cause (though robot spam dialling seems likely).
Have you looked at the calling features on your parents' phone?
Many cordless systems (esp. BT phones) have a 'do not disturb' feature on them which keeps the phone silent at certain times of day/night.
The 'do not disturb' feature call be used in conjunction with a VIP setting in the phone address book. By marking certain callers in the phone address book as VIPs, the phone will allow VIP callers to break through the 'do not disturb' setting so at night the phone will remain silent unless it is a call from a known person who has been pre-approved as a VIP.
