Dead Phone line

Since a power outage in our area on the 22/3 we have lost our VM phone landline. I cannot contact anyone online as the VM bot tells me to ring a 0345 number (Ha! that's a bit insulting).

I have tried ringing this on and off for the last two days and stuck in a que, I suspect like many others. There seems to be a lot of people with the same problem, but I don't know if VM are doing anything as the online checks report no fault found. Well sorry, there is a fault and this is costing me a fortune having to now use my mobile phone for all calls and making a lot of people aware of the lack of a home phone line service.

What is going on VM???????

  • Hi abtrooper82 thanks for posting and welcome back to our community.

Sorry to hear you're currently without a landline service. And for any inconvenience this may be causing. I know you've used the online service status page and found no issues, but you can also login, run diagnostics and if necessary, book an engineer visit. Also, for future reference, if you still have the traditional phone socket, connection you may find here and here, useful. However, as you've reached out to us, I would love to have a look on your behalf. I'm going to send you a private message. Please keep an eye on your inbox in the top right of your screen.

      Hi Lee,

We had to connect our phones to the VM broadband modem to resolve the fault. However, if anyone who has a number that is withheld now tries to ring us, they are told our number is blocked. The engineer who did the work, tested it from a mobile phone number, but not another landline. So mobile phone numbers + using 1470 is the only way withheld numbers can now contact us. We have a call blocker service from VM as our home phones don't have this feature. So, the only thing we can think of is some thing has changed on the system since the change over to the modem connection.  When I spoke to VM, they said to disconnect the phone for an hour as they had made changes but couldn't tell me what they had done, which makes me think nothing has changed.

      Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AFAIK, the only blocking service that VM offers is anonymous caller rejection (ACR). This prevents 'withheld' numbers from causing your phone to ring. This is indiscriminate at blocking withheld numbers so legitimate callers (such as hospitals, doctors etc.) who withhold get blocked in the same way as scam callers who withhold. If you had this service previously before your recent fault it would/should have behaved in the same way.

If you want to customise your call screening you need a phone with these feaures or a separate device. I used this device when I had a VM landline

and it worked brilliantly well to screen out unwanted calls but let through those from callers who were welcome.
