My work VPN suddenly not working

Ive been with VM for about 4-5 years and have never had an issue. Since yesterday my work laptop, on which I have to use a VPN to access the hospital systems is losing connection every few minutes, making working from home almost impossible.
I have a hub 3, all other devices are working normally. My work IT help desk say there is nothing wrong with the laptop or at the hospital end but think it may be something to do with Virgin?

Any help very much appreciated

Wired or Wifi connection?  Best to use wired if at all possible.

Normally Wi-Fi but have tried wired as well. Makes no difference.

If all your other devices are working and the laptop is still disconnecting even using a cable, it is strange.

Does the laptop VPN reconnect or do you lose all internet connections on the laptop?  It does seem on the surface a laptop specific problem.

        Hey elbee8_1,

Welcome to the community and thanks for taking the time to post here on the forums.
I’m sorry to hear of the issues that you’re having with your connection via VPN, are you still having these issues at the moment?

        Kind Regard,

        Steven_L

  • I'm having exactly the same issue has this and it only started in last couple of weeks. Prior to that I've been working form home with no issues for years. I work for a different NHS organisation to the original poster.

Only affects my work laptop when connected to my Virgin router (Hub 3). I've checked all the settings on router, restarted router which makes no difference.

If I connect my laptop to a different ISP or via my phone as a hotspot it works without any issues. as soon as i reconnect to my Virgin router the issue returns.

Running out of things to try.

Have you checked these settings on the VM Hub ?

Disable MAC filtering to re-enable Paused devices

Login to the Hub's menus at http://192.168.0.1

      1) Advanced settings >>> Wireless >>> Security

1.1) then set Wireless MAC Filtering to Disabled

         1.2) "Apply changes"

      2) Advanced settings >>> Security >>> MAC Filtering

2.1) then delete all entries in the MAC filter list

          2.2 Enable Always on

         2.3) "Apply changes"

Yes I checked the MAC Filtering settings.

Also checked these as per other articles I've seen

@cidersam same problem here. It’s ironic as Virgin provide my Trust with their internet.

@elbee8_1 what VPN do you use at NBT? Also do you know what Anti Virus software you use. Just trying to establish if their is any common factor?

  • Hi Lois
Can you recall what the fix was? I work for a NHS Trust in the Midlands and have been unable to connect to VPN for the last month over VM connection, works fine if I tether to mobile phone.
    Thanks

I had to log in to the router and do something to the DMV (demilitarised zone). The IT manager from my neighbouring NHS talked me through it. I had to give the DMV my laptop IP or network ID from memory. I actually ditched Virgin and moved to BT after due to costs (sorry Virgin)

Using the DMZ is not a fix, it's a temporary work-around, potentially leaving your laptop open to attacks.   More likely something in the Hub Firewall that's incompatible with the VPN being used.

Depending on the VPN config it might need port 500 allowed through in the port forwarding settings.

Its not that hard to fix this just people like there router mode too much, VM don't care in fact they do this intentionally so you get their Business package if you don't like this use hub in modem mode or leave

we have a  bout 300 VM users, so switching them to modem mode is not an option
