Hello, Just a quick question about 1Gb Speeds

Hello there, my Darlins

I have a conundrum that has been bothering me for months now. When ever I do a speed test on SamKnows, I always get roughly the same result (see below)

Now, before ya'all jump on me, I know this is not a bad speed by far, and I am satisfied that it gets the job done, but the thing is this is the speed I always get, no matter what time of the day I test... So off I went onto the internet, asking my mate google if they could shed any light as to why I never get the full 1gb, as seductively promised by VM, and then I found this (see below)

This was someone else's speed, they posted over on that Reddit. As you can clearly see, the speed they get is how it should be, as promised by the VM wizards. So why oh why does mine never go beyond those 3, more than adequate, digits? Is it me, or is it you, come on VM, I know it's you :D

Can anyone shed some light on this. Oh and also, my router, the one they gave me when I upgraded to the 1Gb speed, The WPS button just does not work, never has, nu uh! The only way I can get the WPS function to work is if I go into the routers settings, you know where the fairies live, and manually click the lil red button to make the magic happen, and yes I have tried resetting the router, unplugging it, I even tried to palm it off on a travelling gypsy, but none of this worked...tell me why VM....whyyyyyyyy?

If its a wired device it probably has a 1Gbps Ethernet port, which tops out at around 940Mbps including overheads.

If you want full speed to one device you'd need a 2.5Gbps Ethernet port connected to the single 2.5Gbps Ethernet port available on the HUB 5.

If it's wireless that's good going really.

You can get full speeds, less overheads of course, if you have a hub 5 (as it has a 2.5Gbps port) and a PC with a similar port. Most PCs should support PCIe 2.0 x1 or higher, so you can fit a 2.5Gbps PCIe network card.

  • Does the PC your using have a 2.5 Gbit port?

If it only has a 1 Gigabit port ie 1,000,000 bits you can only get 960 gbit tops

the 2.5 Gigabit port operates at 2,500,000 therefore you can operate at the faster 1160 which is the max you can get on the Gigbit speed. As shown in the test nb the is is with an online game running in the background, I regualarly get speeds as fast as 1190.

  • there is also an additional Complication as to what firmware your Hub6 is using.

LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5 turns on Energy Efficient Ethernet which nobles the 2.5 Gigabit port on the hub, making it useless. But if your willing to buy a managed switch which turns EEE off by default. You can then get the full capacty of the port.

There is supposed to be a newer version available but this is not being rolled out quickly, I have been waiting since June. Make me wonder if Virgin are blocking people from using the headline speed. This has been reported on several websites as well.

      Hi

I wonder if this is why my netgear rs200 wifi7 router wouldn't work when the hub6 was in  modem mode and it was connected to the 2.5g port. Surely virgin should be getting this sorted and get an update scheduled immediately but then again it's been since 2024.

I wonder what their playing at

      Thanks john

        Hub 6 ????

I know of Hub 5 for Gig via Co-ax & Hub 5x which is the full fibre to the home, version for 2 Gig.

As someone else has suggested it may be worth checking if you can disable EEE for the Wan port. Cant find any information about this in the manual for the Nighthawk AX120 or your RS200

Most PC / Laptop NICs allow EEE to be disabled in the Device Manager for compatibility with the Hub 5 2.5Gb/s port.

3rd party Routers may also allow EEE to be disabled in the WAN port & then the Hub 5 2.5Gb/s port should work.

Only Managed Network Switches offer the ability to disable EEE.

      Hi

Ye this issue was driving me around the bend, I was wondering if it was the router and then netgear support couldn't help. Glad to know it's this issue that could be causing the problem. Surely their must be a update soon to fix this but it has been since last year

      Thanks again
