Has Virgin Ever Reduced Your Broadband Speed?

We have noticed recently that Virgin have halved our upload speed and the wifi signal ia no longer good enough.

I renewed my contract recently online and was given to understand that  everything would remain unchanged.but it hasn't. For years I've been uploading data weekly using filezilla at just over 3mps. Now that is halved.

Possibly coincidentally the wifi signal will now not reach a laptop which has been happily used in that position for years.

Of course these days with little or nothing in writing it's carte blanche for unscrupulous companies to ride roughshod over consumers.

I hope that isn't the case here

  • Used to get 240 now it is half that, tried 4 different speedtest sites and all give the same reading yet if I use VM speed test its 274mbps,sounds a bit fishy to me.

      Hello davyandjane,

Welcome back to the Community, and thanks for taking the time to post. I’m sorry to hear of the issues that you’re experiencing with your connection at the moment. I've looked into this, and I can see that there are issues across most of your downstream channels, which will be causing the issues that you're experiencing. An engineer visit would be required to resolve this. I can arrange the appointment from here; however, I would need to confirm a few details via a private message, which I will drop over in a moment. Please look out for the private message, and we can get started.
      Kind Regards,

  • Traffic Management was quite a few years ago now and left behind. Other factors on HFC network (coax) like noise on SNR, power levels out of range can affect speed, over utilisation on a specific segment or CMTS right down to issues on your device such as incorrect MTU size causing fragmentation, switches behaving badly, lan adapters configure incorrectly or driver bugs. So many OTHER reasons than direct traffic shaping/management by VM.

You think Virgin have a secret setting to reduce WiFi range and speed?

Sounds like you need to checkout the wifi coverage rather than the broadband service.

In a word - No.  I’ve been with NTL/VM on and off for many years and never had any speed problems.
