Potential new customer

I am going to be moving to a house that has Virgin Media as an option for the first time - I will have the choice of FTTP or Virgin and I am looking into the options.

I have read somewhere that I should check whether the Virgin connection would be “XGS PON” whatever that means.  The comment was that if I am offered a 2GB synchronous connection, that means it must be XGS PON?  This comment was from a couple of years ago so I don’t know what is the current situation.

When I run the Virgin Media postcode checker on the property, I am offered “2000Mbps” and the detailed info says £6 upgrade for additional upload speed and 2000Mbps in both directions.

Is this what the comment meant by 2GB in both directions, so the property must have this XGS PON?

Yes, that property must be service by Nexfibre, who are VM's supplier of the XGS-PON FTTP network.

If 2000 / 2000 is possible it is VM XGS-PON - the VM Hub 5x is supplied it is a device that does not and given the time that has passed Hub 5x may never support modem mode .

I am not a network expert but is this important?  If I want to use a separate wireless router can I not just disable the wifi in the VM box and connect a wireless router to the ports on the box provided?

You will end up with Double NAT as you are using 2 Routers. That’s the issue with no modem mode on the Hub 5X.

It says Virgin Media / Nexfibre is available.

Against Virgin media it says 2000MbPs XGS-PIA

That seems to align with what you have already found out.

Do you have Openreach (or other) providers offering FTTP?

Is the synchronous 2000Mbps an important factor in your decision making?
