New install new build

We had a Virgin connection to our old house, which has been demolished and we are now building a new house which is due to be completed in a couple of months.

I've signed up to a new Virgin contract and had an engineer out who has laid a new cable and left it rolled up outside. I now have another appointment to complete the install. I really want the cables to be laid inside the house now, as I do not want cables all over the walls. My builder is happy to install the cables ready for the Virgin install. Is this OK and what cables should he use? Or should I get out another engineer and try and explain again they need to run cables inside now before the plasterboard goes on.

  • Usual suggestion on here for this task is to get your builder to install some empty conduit, with a pull rope inside, linking the positions where you need the VM cables to run.

In some past topics, the customer has managed to get hold of the correct VM cable, from VM, but the advantage of a conduit system is that the cable can be renewed, or added to, in the future if a pull rope is left in place once the VM cable is installed.

With some conduit in place, and a pull rope, the VM tech can pull through the correct VM cable type at your second installation date.

If you are building from scratch, you could/should also consider installing ethernet network cables in suitable locations as part of the build. That sort of cable is commonly available and could be fitted by your electrician.

Thanks, will ask the builder if they can do that. Yes we have CAT6 cables run to most important locations study, playroom and TV.
