Installation

Hello - I am having Virgin Media installed in a couple of weeks and have a question about the installation. I know that I will need the Virgin Media cable drilled into my home to connect to the wi-fi router. Will the TV box also need a cable running through the house or can that just connect to the WiFi connection provided by the router? Thank you for your help.

  • In all cases just a single cable is brought to the property, and inside the property the cable will be split with one leg for the hub and the other leg for the TV box. Also, unless there is good reason otherwise, the box should be connected to the hub with an Ethernet cable for reliability.

If you opt for phone you connect your old handset to the hub with a short adapter cable provided by VM.

Virgin’s TV boxes (apart from Virgin Stream) are broadcast receivers. Channels are broadcast down the cable in the same format as from a satellite dish or rooftop antenna, so the box must have a direct connection to the incoming cable. This can be split outside to make two entry points, or bought inside & split internally to service both TV box & hub.

Apologies for jumping on your thread, Idb.... how does it work for XGS-PON (i.e. the Hub 5x)? When I'm able to order (soon, hopefully!) I'm planning on taking internet and TV. I have a specific location I want the router installed and that is nowhere near the TV, but I do have ethernet running between the two locations. Will my own 1Gbps network be ok to hook the TV box up to? Or will Virgin insist on running their own cable between the two?

  • For XGS-PON the fibre can be run anywhere (within reason) as distance is not an issue. There is no STB like a 360, so VM has the Stream box but it does not record. You connect your Ethernet cable to the Stream's power adapter.

One other piece of advice. Do not cancel your existing broadband service until VM is installed and working property.

VM installations are often delayed, and you don't want to be left without broadband.

  • I’ve got the Stream box on XGS-PON since VM went Live last October, it’s brilliant, no issues at all no drop outs, you have a Watchlist where all the shows you select to watch are, you set them from the tv guide, it’s lists all the episodes of that program, when viewing you can fast forward through adverts & you don’t have to pay £5 a month like you have to on Sky Stream
