allowing access to my property, not a customer

i just found a card from virgin media saying they need access to my garden to replace damaged cable. I sm not a virgin media customer and i dont want them walking through my home, my garden can only be accessed by walking through my home, i will find this very intrusive to say the least and dont want muddy boots walked through my home either.

I rang the number provided on the card (03454541111) which led me to an automated service that wanted my customer account numbers and area code number, again i am not a customer!

They may have a wayleave issued before you occupied the house. In any case it’s unlikely you will get any ‘compensation’.

hmm. The fact they need access, suggest that in the past someone has agreed for them to lay a cable. Equally, they may just have done it whilst someone away from house.

I'd get them in to move the cable to the other person's garden if that can be done and take photos of garden before in case of any mess/damage, just in case.

Use it as a condition of access that they agree to move the cable. Not sure how work intensive that is, whether it's under tarmac/concrete etc. Wonder if it was an easy way to do the cable originally as perhaps you have grass and they had tarmac/concrete. Must be a reason for coming onto your land.

  • they can also access the cable via the roof, they will need to get the council to let them up there. I never signed a wayleave and their is an alternate route. Let VM deal with the people they actually payed to put their awful sagging cables up instead of bothering me.

      Hello karenvirtua.

Thanks for your post and welcome to our community.

We can assure you that any team attending will make sure your property is not damaged from muddy footprints.

As they will need access to your property, you will be home to oversee any work carried out.

We can feed any damage back if needed.

Regarding the cabling over the roof, this would be a health and safety issue as we're unable to work over a certain height.

Please keep us posted how you get on.

have non of it unless they can either provide a copy of a wayleave agreement that is current and from what you say you have never supplied one or they are prepared to enter into some sort of payment for the inconvience of a cable thats only accessable through your house

they and others here will argue that an old wayleave agreement signed by a previous owner is all they need - complete rubbish - any such agreement should have been picked up by a solicitor when you bought the house or if you have a rental agreement - in which case the landlord would know of it

VM have no regard for legallities - they hope/assume you will either think they are in the right and conform to their request or bully you

so as i started - have non of it
