'Minimum 30 days notice'

Hi

I apologise in advance that at the moment due to illness I am unable to think clearly and my existing 'contract' ends on March 8th 2026.I want to leave VM then and keep hearing that I can cancel my services 30 days before i.e February 8th 2026 but I don't understand why if it reads 'minimum' doesn't that mean I could give notice before February 8th? VM themselves say 30 days is enough time and I've seen even up to 60 days somewhere so what are the advantages giving a longer notice period.

Thank you all

This is a contested issue, with some reporting 60 days is the minimum and others reporting 30 days.  Personally, I've always used 30 days, and cancelled via Recorded, Signed For letter without any problems.

My recollection of a past topic on here (when a VM person gave a reply on the 60 day question) was that the 60 day limit was a restriction on how far into the future VM's systems could log a cancellation request.

For anyone wishing to leave VM altogether, but still wanting to complete the minimum term, I can't see any particular advantage or disadvantage in giving notice early.

For someone considering leaving, but also open to the idea of renewing, then giving notice near to the 30 days before the end of the minimum term has the advantage of giving the customer greatest bargaining power with VM.

VM is geared up to conducting all of these administrative processes near to the end of the minimum term period. Even if you do give your notice period early, you could very well find out that VM fails to act on the early instruction as it may not be processed correctly. We have also seen past topics where a customer tries to give notice as early as possible only for VM to act on the instruction immediately and instantly cut off the customer's services.

We see regular topics on here where VM fails to follow its own standard processes in a reliable way and something gets messed up. Anyone trying to initiate a non-standard process with VM simply increases the likelihood of VM messing it up!

There is a VM Staff response regarding notice required Here

'We can terminate your services during your discounted contract term up to 60, 45, & 30 days, but that is the notice period to terminate, should you leave still in your 18 month discounted term you will get Early Termination Fees. To avoid Early Termination Fees the final date of service has to be the contract end date on your contract.

With those who say they can and cannot do it on various days prior, that is a departmental decision for each department you interact with. Some have permissions and some have not, what ever that department states is their limitation to access the calendar for termination end date timescales. '

To avoid any possible problems I would suggest either following the usual 30 days notice principle, or should you wish to use a longer period, or actual date, then use the correspondence method and send your leaving request by (signed for) post to: Virgin Media, Sunderland, SR43 4AA
