Contract up for renewal upselling

My current contract expires in February, and I noticed that there were some targeted renewal options available for me online. My M350 broadband has remained unchanged for years and one of the options is an upgrade to 1Gig with a new hub 5 router. I would be interested in this. When I go into the detail of the renewal I see that the cost of the TV package, broadband and home phone combined is less than the current add ons I have of Sky sports and TNT. I could literally more than half my bill by getting rid of the sports channels, however as always there is no option to downgrade a package. Please can you tell me how to do this.

You'll have to contact VM and negotiate for the services that you actually want (rather than a ready-made package VM offers you). A ready-made package is likely to favour VM's interests.

Before you speak to VM, do some research into the alternatives available to you. You will then be in a position to decide if any deal VM offers you is any good or not.

Thanks for your reply. I do have alternatives to VM. Where I live there is another cable provider called Truspeed who are being competitive in trying to attract new customers. I have already received a quote from them for broadband for when my VM contract ends in February. If VM contacted me through this forum I would be happy to discuss a future contract. They are so difficult to contact directly with these issues.

The VM people on here generally don't get involved in contract renewals (although one should reply to your topic, usually within a few days of your first post)

If you have some alternatives to VM then you are in a good position to negotiate a good deal. Only works though if you are genuinely prepared to leave. A canny VM sales person will know if you are just trying your luck with no intention of actually leaving and will make offers accordingly

You have maximum negotiating power with VM in the last 30 days before your minimum term is up.

  • The deals that you have suggested through the link seem to be for new customers. I have been a customer of VM and its predecessors for 28 years and luckily I now have some very good options locally. My enquiry is about the renewal options I have been given through my account and their costs. Although my renewal is for around the same price as I am currently paying (for now), faster broadband included, I was under the impression from my quote that the sports add ons are costing me over 50% of the total price. This is too much. If I wanted to, how do I remove the add ons. It always seems that when you increase your package over time because of the way that it is sold it becomes increasingly difficult to unravel and simplify.

You need to speak to cancellations to remove any addons, including the sports addons.

You should select options 1,1, 4 and 4 when dialling 150 from a VM landline, or 0345 454 1111 from any other phone, which should put you through to retentions (thinking of leaving) They can remove the addons, they also have better offers than the front line agents.  Although you might speak to a first line agent to begin with tell them you are wanting to speak to cancellations and they should then pass you through to the actual retentions agent.

You can also get in touch using one of the following contact methods:

      WhatsApp: 0780 3089 684

Or you can contact VM on Social Media by either messaging

      Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/virginmedia/

      Or Instagram DM (@virginmedia)

The link above should take you to our best prices, is it showing new customers deals for you?

You also should be able to manage any adds via your online account here

Let us know if you find this okay.

Don't accept any 'upgrade' they tempt you with that you don't really need. They know that 1Gb download is not noticeable for the great majority of users, so they can offer it with little cost to them.

If you have an alternative full fibre supplier at a better price, and you are still on VM's old fashioned coax connection, why would you not change?
