Contract renewal - we now have to have Netflix with ads?!

I’ve renewed my contract with VM after having Netflix Standard for the last 18 months, and now I’m told that the only product they offer is Netflix Standard with ads. Not exactly the same package I originally had, yet higher cost and longer contract terms (24 months). Had spent the best part of 2 hours on phone trying to sort this out, is there any recourse with trying to get the renewal to include Netflix Standard as I used to have? Has anyone had any luck with this? Feel like I’ve been scammed.

I believe another poster was quoted £6 a month to remove ads.

  • Thanks everyone for the responses - just wanted to see if anyone was successful in “upgrading” to Netflix Standard as part of their re-negotiation. I’m not great at these things so hung up the phone feeling like I had been “had”. If others have been in the same situation, I’ll mark it up to that just being the norm now. Thanks again.

Yes, it's with Ads. Unless you have actually been promised "the same as before" and have evidence of that.

I was told my package was exactly the same as before…but Netflix only comes with ads now when I questioned it. So not quite exactly same but the agent did mention ads and said “we have had issues with Netflix, this is all there is”. Which at the time I wasn’t sure if it was a fob off or not, but seems not! Thank you!

        Hi yve-far,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums. ⭐

We're sorry to hear there's been some confusion around the renewal of your package. The wording in the email refers to your core services with Virgin Media (Broadband, TV and Phone). Add on's and extras need to be checked to ensure they are still included.

All new packages taken with Netflix, will only include Standard with Ads. This is due to tier changes done on Netflix's side.

When looking at your pre-contract documents, does this show as Netflix Standard? If so, pop back and let us know and we can help further.

In terms of the 24 month contract, this is the standard term we offer now. This changed recently to bring us in line with other providers.

        Many thanks,

  • It depends. Were you told that you would have the "same package" or words to that effect when you went about your renewal?

This sounds standard, I don't think there's much to "sort out" here unfortunately.

The new minimum-terms are indeed 24months since a month or so now. And yes, the inclusive Netflix offer is now "standard with ads" since last October or so.
