Sorry to hear of the issues setting the My Virgin Media account up, we appreciate you raising this via the forums.
Usually, the details used to sign into the MyVM account should transfer over when a change of account takes place. Can you confirm if this was just a new package? New account completely? Or related to a house move? Are you trying to do this using the same email address as the old account?
Let us know and we'll be happy to take a look. There should be the option to set up the MyVM using a different email address if you have more than one available.- oli_tattyJoining in

yes, it was a new package. I cancelled the broadband at my old flat, and ordered a new package in my new flat using the same email.
