How to create an App Password

Hi, I want use Em Client for my emails instead Outlook and although I have been able to create my outlook.com and gmail.com accounts when I try to set up my virginmedia.com accounts it says I have to create an "app password" on the MyVirginMedia website and use that as the password instead of my normal email account password.

However when I have logged into MyVirginMedia I cannot see any way to create this "app password".

Does anyone know how I can do this?

Sign into the My Virgin Media (MVM) account for the relevant email account

Click on "Account details" and then on "My Virgin Media account details"

Click on "edit" to the right of Password

Go through the verification process with the non VM email account that you have assigned to that VM email account.

Once you have entered the Verification Code into the boxes in the MVM account that will take you to the "Security and sign in details" screen

At the bottom of that screen in the Virgin Media Mail section you'll see "Manage your Virgin Media Mail app password" . Click on "Manage" and it will generate a new Mail app password for that VM email account.

You'll need to go through that process for every VM email account that you went to add to your Em email client. They will each have their own Mail app password.

Ah OK thanks - I was confused by being asked to set up another email account.

If the account is currently working in Outlook then it should work in any email client with the same password so try with your existing password before going through the process to get a new app password.

  • Has something changed recently because I can't see the "Account details" option, nor any other route to generate an app password. Under "Account Settings" I see "identity & Security Settings"; "Marketing and contact preferences"; "Online Security"; "Virgin media Mail Settings" and "provider Switch".

Under Virgin Media Mail settings I have ID settings and Security settings, neither of which provide a route to generate an app password.

Can someone please provide a current, valid, steep-by-step process to put Virgin Media Mail on Outlook, as it is configured today, please.

For the benefit of other readers the new route is:

To create one or update an existing one you need to follow these steps:

Sign into the My Virgin media account for the email concerned with your VMO2ID
      Select Account Settings
      Select Identity & Security Settings
      Select Manage your products
      Select Manage email app password
Click on the blue button 'Get New Password'

Make a note of the generated password.  This is what you use in the mail apps along with the vm email address as the username.
