So much talk about Windows 11, I thought I'd give it a try and see what all the fuss was about.It took just over an hour to make the changes. I had to download an updated bios for my motherboard, which made the necessary adjustments without having to go into the bios sections and manually adjust items, and you have to do that first or the bios won't pass the inspection and the Windows 11 won't install.So I got it up and running. Now checking it out, after clicking on the Windows Icon in the taskbarInstalled software wasn't showing anymore and no tiles on the desktop, luckily I had made shortcuts for the most used software in Windows 10, so they were showing on the desktop and taskbar after the installation.I found it difficult to navigate around after being used to Windows 10, and a lot of the useful menu items were missing on right-click on an icon. The transparency effects no longer worked either.I missed the weather and speedtest on tiles and the current temperature and state of weather on the taskbar. I played around with Windows 11 for a few hours before deciding to switch back to Windows 10 😃The only good thing that I found about it was that it seemed quicker when using Windows explorer.So if you've tried it or are using it, what are your views on it?

A very brave person indeed who does an in-situ Windows upgrade of a beta version and then reverts back again! The final version of W11 appears to be due out tomorrow if all the publicity is to be believed!Have not tested it out myself and have no kit which would be capable of running the final version. Have looked at the many reviews of it though and none seemed overly enthusiastic about it.I think Windows has had its day now along with MS Office. So many borked regular updates for both rolled out so often and with so little quality control. Will probably start looking at alternatives to W11 for my own setup when that time eventually comes.

StartAllBack resolves pretty much all taskbar problems that Microsoft seems to have built in - the smaller height is correct - icon size is reduced and they are correctly positioned as is the date its not the only taskbar hack but the most polished imo

Are you on the insiders programme, or developers?
Just wondering how you managed to get the windows 11 update offered?
Don't have a 'spare' PC to try it on if I could, sadly at the mo.
(always use a non important pc for these sort of things, so if it all goes wrong ( as it sometimes does with Microsoft!!) haven't 'lost' anything vital!!)
Interested more than anything else, basically. (ie, nosy!)

  Thanks for the reply. I joined the insiders on Sunday last just to try out the Windows 11 beta, same day after that I just reverted to the old Windows10 again.
  Just using the one PC at the moment. I used to be in the insiders a few years ago but dropped out, so I know how to revert back again after trying something out. It was fairly quick to revert back.

I don't think I'm alone in thinking this is just one time consuming con. Fair enough if you like playing with PCs but I only use it for what I want, and I can't remember anything windows have done or offered since windows 7 that has been anything more than an interfering annoyance..

  I was looking forward to being able to run android apps on Windows 11 without having to use the bluestacks android emulator.
  Windows Insiders in the beta channel, who have build 22000.282 or higher, can now set up Windows Subsystem for Android and install a select group of apps from the Amazon app store.
  The current problem is your PC's region must be set to USA and you also need to have a U.S based Amazon account to use the Amazon Appstore.

WINDOWS 11- free upgrade to windows 10.
Running windows 11 now and seems good, it took 2 days to get the download to work, due to insufficient storage. Also I had to use a usb pen during the installation for temporary files. (I used 64gb)
Windows 11 needs a microsoft account set up, so I set that up in windows 10 ready for the update.
Windows 11 download and installation kept failing several times with error codes due to storage, so I had to delete some unusued stuff to make space, I eventually managed the windows 11 install, with 2gb spare on C drive which is only 64gb ssd drive. The old windows 10 remains also on the C drive in case of rollback.
The layout has changed but is very similar to windows 10, cortana not active but can be added.
I also downladed update kb5007215 (26/12/2021) and a driver update to my laptop, two more updated are pending kb5008215 & kb5006363, not sure why pending.
My older laptop is still on windows10, too old to update to windows11, but I think windws 10 will be supported till 2025.
All my files and programmes were saved but I did back up my data to a flash drive, one local account was removed by choise to make space, not sure if windows 11 home does local accounts, but I will now use the microsoft account which has a pin login.

  Windows 11 Pro does not need a MS account, you can just use a local account. I've always used the Pro versions of Windows, especially as you get full disk encryption with Bitlocker.

  My windows crashed- wifi switched off, would only work on ethernet.
  After I did some fault finding which is not easy in windows 11, I reset windows 11 and wifi still did not work.
  I lost most of my programmes also, so still putting them back on.
  I eventually found the windows firewall had switched off connections to the wifi adapter, and I ticked them manually to fix the issue, it was in flight mode but could not get out of flight mode, even a firewall reset did not work.
  The issue may have been caused by a clash of software during updates of windows, but resetting windows removed a lot programmes, one may have interfered with the firewall settings.
  The old windows 10 had auto deleted so I could not roll back to windows 10 which was a concern. This has at least solved my storage issue so I now have 18gb spare on c drive.

    I've found that you rarely need to fall back to a previous version of Windows, so losing W10 is unlikely to be a big deal.
    I suggest running with minimum apps and gradually installing more may help identify a problem app.

I have an Asus P8P67 pro mobo and a I7 2600 K cpu. I dont have any kind of TPM device with that so I will never be able to try windows 11.
My computer will run anything any other computer can run and just as efficiently.
The new requirements for TPM are simply an artificial means of making sure everyone has to upgrade their hardware.
Note the changes to hardware over the last 12 years have been miniscule compared to the 5 years prior to that.
Hardware manufacturers have run out of ideas and so Microsoft put this ridiculous requirement for TPM onto windows 11.
Luckily I mainly use Linux anyway but it would have been nice to try it. I'm not spending £1500 just to have a better
rig, though, so I'll just wait till the missus gets a better computer but she will prolly go with an Apple computer.

  There is a hack to allow the machines that cannot install Windows 11 to install it.

  And for everyone else. I have been using Ubuntu for years and i am at 20.04LTS and it dual boots along with Windows 10. I spend more time on it than i do on Windows. Try it, as i find it to be way more flexible. And you can run all your windows programs etc using an emulator called WINE.

I had to reinstall win 11 some weeks back.

Number one thing you should do is don't use the login you made! Open up lusrmgr.msc and make a new user with admin rights if needed and use that.

    My windows laptop keeps trying to install the windows 11 update 24H2, and I tried a few times and had to make space and add a usb drive during the installation, however it fails on restart sticking at 0%. on 3 attempts
    As my laptop is on 64gb, that may be the problem, I think once installed it uses 30GB.
    The 24H2 update option has now stopped appearing today, I think 23H2 will get support 2 years from 1/11/2024 (24 months), whereas 24H2 will get 36 months support..
    My laptop is 5 years old, perhaps I need a laptop with bigger storage say 256gb and 16gb ram, my windows 10 laptop is supported till October 2025.
    It seems that the software keeps outpacing the hardware thus making it obsolete, I may consider trying chrome o/s which is free if windows stops working eventually.
    Would the advice be to stay with windows 11 23H2 rather than get problems such as bitlocker.?
    The windows o/s just keeps getting bigger each time it upgrades needing more free space, perhaps making some computers redundant, as the drive is solid state and can not be increased on my machine. Some laptops have both solid state and a normal hard drive, is that a better option.

I can't remember the last time I was offered a BIOS update via Windows Update? Also as far as Manufacture's software, that's the first thing to be uninstalled IMHO. My last two purchases, a Lenovo laptop was wiped and Win 11 Pro installed and a DELL desktop had every single bit of 3rd party software removed, including the horrendous "Killer" NIC software, This also has Win 11 Pro. Both have Bitlocker deployed as well.
It's fair to say I hate bloatware .... 😉

MS has recently announced that individual W10 users will be able to buy another year of support for critical updates for $30 come October 2025 which might keep some hardware going a bit longer such as your W10 laptop

Typical Microsoft then, they've done that with pretty much every Windows version, offering extended support.
I'm like really considering just formatting my PC and just switching to something like Ubuntu, because it's free and I don't have to pay for updates.

I'm a Gig2 customer, with a fairly techy network at home i introduced to hopefully make the most of 10gbps networking should it ever be available on XGSPON.
By far my worst nightmare was getting an SFP+ NIC card to work with Windows 11!
I have a fair few NIC cards laying around from Dell servers, and HP servers and only a single one worked on Windows 11. - Some of them had weird issues such as only detecting a SFP when the second adapter was disabled, thus still did not provide a connection.
Managed to get a HP NIC working in the end and it provides seamless 10gbps throughput, although i am a bit worried about installing updates as it’s only a matter of time before that also stops working!
It works for now, although it takes around 1 minute for windows to detect the NIC after resuming from sleep, so not sure how long it will work for 🤣
