I have just switched from sky to virgin, I can’t see how you can record catch up programs from iplayer to 360 box…you can on sky, am I missing something?

No, you can’t record any streaming on Virgin Media. No need.
Put the streaming program in a Watchlist.

Recording programmes is always preferable to using VoD/streaming, but you need to set the recording in advance of broadcast. The programme is then saved to your HDD for later viewing.

Ooh, that's interesting. Currently using a HDHomeRun to record Freeview to my NAS\Plex but being able to fill in any missed recordings would be useful, and potentially even more useful in the future when Freeview disappears and we're stuck with "Freely" which doesn't sound like it's going to include recording features.

Only "broadcast" products will have the ability for you to make your own copy to keep as long as you like. Cloud recording & temporary catch-up download facilities are controlled directly by the broadcaster, which is what the copyright owners have always wanted.
You can only download BBC content from within the iPlayer app. Once the programme expires on iPlayer, so will the access to your download.

This facility was available under licence to Sky viewers so that customers with slow connections would not suffer buffering of the stream during viewing. As Virgin only uses high speed cable Broadband this is not necessary. You can download content from within the iPlayer to a mobile device to view offline, but no recording of catch-up on TV boxes is allowed.

The application get_iplayer that Roger_Gooner mentioned seems to solve the limitation with downloads, not the most user friendly (it's a command line tool), but a quick test gets me a recording outside of iPlayer. So it's good to have that as a backup if we ever lose Freeview (Hopefully there will be something similar for the other Freeview channels as I see there are similar tools available for Netflix, Disney and Amazon)
